It’s now March, and there’s only a little time left in the 0-year-old class.
In April, when they move up to the 1-year-old class, there will be changes in their environment, such as more friends and a different classroom.
Here are some perfect picture books for March, a month when we want to continue supporting each child according to their individual needs.
An interest in picture books is nourishment for the hearts of 0-year-olds.

[March] Picture books (11–20) that 0-year-olds will find interesting and enjoy
Put it on, put it on.Text by Miyoko Matsutani / Illustrations by Kei Tokoji
Let me introduce “Nosete Nosete,” a picture book featuring vehicles and adorable animals.
It’s a smash hit with over 1.5 million copies in print and is loved by many children.
The story follows Mako-chan, the protagonist, who is driving a car when animals appear and ask for a ride.
The repeated pattern of animals showing up one after another and being given a lift is part of the fun.
Another appeal is the abundant use of onomatopoeia throughout, which conveys a lively, cheerful atmosphere.
And the slightly heart‑pounding development near the end is another highlight.

What first catches the eye is the vivid color palette of Nanako Matsuda’s illustrations.
Its brilliance was recognized when it won the Grand Prize at the 1st MOE Picture Book Awards.
This picture book, Butterfly, features a butterfly as its protagonist.
It depicts the butterfly freely flitting from place to place, and before you know it, as you read, you feel as if you’re traveling along with it.
In addition to the vibrant colors, the story is told from the butterfly’s perspective, which is sure to draw children deeply into the world of the book.
A white butterfly is flying.Yasunari Murakami
Spring is the season when butterflies flit about.
So I’d like to introduce a picture book called “A White Butterfly Is Flying.” In this book, a white butterfly appears.
It flutters in and lands on a flower, and the flower, stimulated by the touch, suddenly blooms.
The flowers come in many colors—red, blue, yellow, and more—so it might spark an interest in colors for babies around 0 years old.
As the butterfly helps many flowers bloom, it all ends in a beautiful flower field.
It’s a perfect book for spring.
Penguin ExerciseMaki Saito
Let me introduce a picture book titled “Penguin Exercises,” which depicts penguins doing gymnastics.
You can enjoy the charming sight of cute penguins working out, and as you read, children will likely want to imitate them and move their bodies too.
It starts with deep breathing, then flapping their hands, lifting and lowering their feet, and finally shows them jumping.
For 0-year-olds, it may still be difficult to move their bodies the way they want, but that awkwardness will make them look even more penguin-like—and surely adorable.
Daruma-san andHiroshi Kagakui
Here’s an introduction to the wildly popular Daruma-san picture book series.
Many of you have probably seen the red, round Daruma figure on the covers in the picture book section of bookstores.
The Daruma-san series is a trilogy: “Daruma-san ga,” where you can enjoy Daruma-san’s unique movements; “Daruma-san no,” which shows Daruma-san’s belongings; and “Daruma-san to,” featuring Daruma-san’s delightful friends.
Each book is packed with a mysterious charm—the sound and rhythm of the words are irresistibly catchy.
Be sure to read them aloud and enjoy them together with your child.
In conclusion
We introduced picture books that are perfect for enjoying with 0-year-olds in March.
Babies at this age show all kinds of daily growth—some are learning words, some are starting to walk, and others are interested in food.
It would be wonderful if they also become curious about the themes in picture books.
Books that teachers enjoy reading will surely resonate with the children’s hearts as well.
Please use this as a reference when choosing picture books.
