When you think of something that represents Halloween, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the pumpkin, right?
In its place of origin, the custom is to carve a pumpkin into a jack-o’-lantern to ward off evil.
In Japan, though, it’s become more of a symbolic character of Halloween.
In this article, we introduce ideas for making jack-o’-lanterns and pumpkin-themed crafts using scrap materials and everyday items.
Be sure to decorate with them or wear them, and enjoy Halloween day!

[Childcare] Halloween Pumpkin Craft Ideas [Part 2] (1–10)
Self-righting pumpkin

How about making an “upright pumpkin” using items you can buy at a 100-yen shop, like marbles and pipe cleaners? The great thing about this decoration is that it’s easy to make without any special tools or techniques.
Make the face out of construction paper and style the hat with a pipe cleaner—just don’t forget to put a marble inside the face! That way, you’ll have a whimsical pumpkin decoration that pops back up on its own even when you tip it over.
This decoration is sure to delight little boys and girls in particular.
Paper fan pumpkin

Do you know what a paper fan is? “Fan” refers to a fan shape, right? So it’s an ornament made of paper in a fan shape.
Many people in Japan may not know it, but abroad it’s a beloved staple interior item.
You can easily try it by just attaching eyes and a mouth made from construction paper to an orange paper fan.
A single piece looks cute, but displaying several together makes an even bigger impact.
In that case, try adding some creative touches, like making ghosts with white paper fans.
origami

There are many children who aren’t used to making things, right? Some might even try creating something for the first time thanks to Halloween.
That’s why the first thing I recommend is an origami Jack-o’-lantern.
All you do is fold paper and draw a face with a pen—just two steps.
It’s simple, but by discovering how fun those two actions can be, kids may become interested in other kinds of crafts, too.
You can stick the Jack-o’-lantern you made on the wall or turn it into a pin badge.
Pumpkin wand made of origami

Many kids go trick-or-treating around their neighborhood on Halloween, right? An item that really boosts the excitement at that time is a pumpkin wand.
This one is a wand made of origami with a jack-o’-lantern on the tip.
Since it’s origami, even small children can make it.
Carrying it around really enhances the Halloween vibe.
Of course, you can also hang it on your wall as decoration.
And why not make a bunch and hand them out to friends?
Footprint Pumpkin Art

If you want to nurture your child’s imagination, I recommend pumpkin art using footprints.
This involves putting paint on the foot and using it to create a pumpkin.
Ask your child to share ideas on how to make a pumpkin with footprints.
Footprint art also has the benefit of recording growth.
It could be fun to make a pumpkin with footprints every year and compare them.
By the way, you can also make black cats with footprints.
Give that a try as well!
Pumpkin piñata

It’s exciting when Halloween approaches, isn’t it? Pick your favorite idea from the ones we introduced and give it a try.
By decorating or wearing them, you’ll likely stay in a festive mood all the way until Halloween day!
Ghost and pumpkin gift case

When it comes to Halloween, we tend to end up making a lot of horror- or gothic-themed items, don’t we? I imagine many people would also like to create something cute.
For those people, I recommend this origami ghost and pumpkin gift case.
It’s a charming design that leaves a strong impression, and you can make it with a single sheet of origami paper.
The folding is a bit complex, but it’s still at a level that children can enjoy.
In the video, the facial features are made from paper, but drawing everything with a pen is also a great option.
