Exciting for 4-year-olds! A collection of sports day event ideas for preschoolers (middle class)

Here are some perfect event ideas for a sports day with four-year-olds! We’ve gathered lots of activities everyone can enjoy—from perennial favorites at the preschool sports festival to unique events that spark the imaginations of middle-year kids.

Relays, beanbag tosses, circuits, and other activities that children can tackle together with their parents offer precious, memorable experiences.

With kids and adults cheering loudly for one another and smiles filling the whole venue, we hope you’ll find inspiration in these heartwarming event ideas.

Fun Idea Contest (1–10)

Balance Ball Circuit

7 Balance Ball Exercises Parents and Kids Can Do Together
Balance Ball Circuit

Here are some ideas for a circuit using a balance ball.

All you need to prepare is a balance ball.

Many people may think of it as something adults use for rehabilitation or training, but there are plenty of fun ways to play with a balance ball, so I highly recommend it! Of course, it’s great for practicing balance and strengthening the core, but you can also incorporate activities suited to each child’s stage of development—like crawling under a springy, bouncy balance ball or clinging to it tightly and using their whole body.

Card flipping

Othello game all year round
Card flipping

It really livens things up when there’s a game that lots of kids can join at once.

The one I’d like to introduce is “Card Flipping.” First, divide the children into two teams.

Then they flip large cards that have different colors on the front and back.

They keep flipping until time runs out, and the team with more cards showing their team color face up at the end wins.

You could say it’s similar to Othello.

By the way, you can substitute the cards with items like floor cushions—just make sure they’re easy to flip.

Pull hoop play

Compassion is the key to winning! Here’s a fun idea for a Pull-the-Hoop game.

Prepare a hula hoop or a ring made from newspaper, some plastic ribbon (suzuran tape), and start and goal lines.

The person moving inside the hoop should walk in step with the moving hula hoop.

Be careful to keep your feet inside the hoop and maintain your balance! The person pulling the hoop should control the speed and the amount of force to guide their teammate to the goal.

Give it a try!

Fun Idea Competition (11–20)

Balloon Trampoline

Balloon Trampoline

Only two materials! Here’s an idea for a balloon trampoline.

The bouncy, springy feeling of a trampoline excites both kids and adults, doesn’t it? This time, let’s play with a DIY trampoline.

All you need is a large vacuum/compression storage bag and balloons.

Inflate the balloons and pack them into the storage bag.

Seal the bag, compress it, and you’re done! A balloon-made trampoline is colorful and sure to capture kids’ attention!

Caterpillar relay

Let's do a caterpillar relay using cardboard for 4-year-olds!

I also recommend the “Caterpillar Relay,” which is fun from the preparation stage.

A caterpillar here refers to the rotating track part that serves as the wheel section on an excavator.

Keeping that in mind, cut cardboard into shape and draw pictures on it.

During the event, a child gets inside and crawls forward, making it look like the caterpillar track is rotating.

If they draw their favorite designs beforehand, it will boost their motivation to participate.

Another appeal of the Caterpillar Relay is that it can be enjoyed as a relay-style race.

Snack-Grab Race

Snack-Grab Race

An arranged version of the classic bread-grabbing race! Here’s an idea for a Snack-Grab Race.

It’s a perfect, exciting event for sports days.

Participants try to get snacks that are hanging from strings without using their hands—jumping and using their bodies to snag them.

Through the competition, kids can nurture a spirit of challenge while having fun.

Individual results matter, but because everyone can cheer each other on and enjoy it together, it’s sure to become a memorable event.

parachute ball

The 46th Sports Day Parachute (Solasi-Do ~ Mela!)

How about trying a “parachute performance” where everyone works together as one? A parachute is a circular, lightweight fabric that participants hold by the edges and lift, rotate, and wave as a recreational activity.

It naturally sparks communication, and because everyone needs to synchronize their movements, it helps deepen bonds through the performance.

Parachutes come in various sizes, so choose one that matches the number of participants.

It’s fun even with as few as three people.
