[Western Music] A roundup of debut songs by female artists from the 1970s

The 1970s were a golden era that saw the debuts of many female artists who left a brilliant mark on music history.

A distinctive feature of that time was the emergence of numerous singer-songwriters—women who wrote and composed their own music and created masterpieces that moved listeners with their remarkable expressive power.

Their debut songs, which can be considered the starting point of their journeys, brim with the radiance of young talents paving the way for a new era.

In this piece, we focus on the first singles of female singers who debuted in the ’70s, introducing a selection of gems that colored the music scene of the time.

[Western Music] A roundup of debut songs by female artists from the ’70s (21–30)

HeartbreakerPat Benatar

Pat Benatar is a rock musician who laid the groundwork back when hard rock hadn’t yet earned the mainstream acceptance it has today.

There were a few female artists singing rock in the 1970s, but she stood out for her especially hard-hitting vocals and gained wide popularity.

Her debut song, Heartbreaker, released in 1979, earned high praise for its dirty, gritty sound.

Highly recommended for rock fans.

Crazy on YouHeart

Heart is a rock band formed in Seattle.

They gained popularity in the 1970s with a hard rock style that was unusual at the time.

The band originally consisted only of men and had been active since 1967.

For a while after their formation, they struggled to achieve commercial success, but when they brought in the Wilson sisters as vocalists, they started scoring hits.

“Crazy on You” was the first song after adding the Wilson sisters and was released as their major-label debut.

If you want to experience the hard rock sound of that era, this is a must-listen.

All the King's GardensJoan Armatrading

Joan Armatrading is an artist whose musicality defies a single category, spanning rock, blues, jazz, and more.

Born in the Caribbean and raised in the UK, she is known as a singer-songwriter who explores universal themes rooted in observation.

This debut song of hers appears on the album “Whatever’s for Us,” released in November 1972.

Built on a folk foundation and graced by her deep, emotive vocals, the piece has a unique appeal: by not pointing to any one specific person, it invites each listener to find their own story within it.

It’s a sparkling early work that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to savor the music of 1970s singer-songwriters.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa ClausLene Lovich

An artist known in the New Wave scene as the “Queen of Quirk,” Lene Lovich used her distinctive voice and eccentric style to influence many artists who followed.

Her debut release was a cover of a Christmas song that everyone knows.

In this work, the child’s shock at seeing their mother kissing Santa Claus is expressed through Lovich’s uniquely offbeat vocals.

An innocent scene is transformed into a surreal, avant‑garde world, resulting in a truly unique piece.

Released as an EP in November 1976, this recording is a rare track not included on any studio album.

Here you can find the roots of Lovich before her later breakout hit, “Lucky Number.” For those tired of run-of-the-mill Christmas songs or curious to glimpse the spark of a maverick talent, this track might be just the thing.

RenacerMiami Sound Machine

Miami Sound Machine is a Latin pop group formed in 1973.

Originally a boys’ group, they added the globally popular singer Gloria Estefan in 1975, becoming a mixed-gender group and changing their name from Miami Sound Boys to Miami Sound Machine.

This time, I’d like to introduce “Renacer” as Gloria Estefan’s debut song.

It features a pleasant sound that blends Latin music with pop.
