It’s Tokyo, Mom.Shimakura Chiyoko

As a kayōkyoku song that depicts Tokyo, this is one that is always mentioned.

It was released more than half a century ago, in 1957.

The lyrics are sprinkled with famous Tokyo landmarks such as Kudanshita, Nijūbashi, and Asakusa.

The song became one of Chiyoko Shimakura’s signature numbers.

She also starred in a film of the same title released that same year.

Abbey Road Townkaguya hime

It was released as the B-side to Kaguya-hime’s 1973 single “Boku no Mune de Oyasumi,” and the chorus has a Beatles-like vibe.

The song is set on Aoyama-dori.

Indeed, the area around there feels similar to Abbey Road.

TokyoKishidan

Kishidan sings about Tokyo with a melody full of speed and drive! This song is included on the album “Nihonjin.” It feels like a declaration of resolve from the band itself—an anthem about forging ahead in the city of Tokyo.

There’s anxiety, pain, and fear, but they sense something calling to their hearts from the city and charge forward.

In a sense, it suggests a fateful guidance coming from Tokyo itself.

I hope Kishidan keeps blazing ahead just like this song!

It was released in 1961.

A song with something of a sequel-like character, Tamako Sakura’s “Tokyo Musume,” was released in 1976.

Una sera di TokyoZa Bīnattsu

The twin sisters The Peanuts had many hit songs.

This song, “Una Sera di Tokyo,” was released by them in 1964.

By the way, “Una Sera di Tokyo” means “A Night in Tokyo” in Italian.

Tokyo LullabyNakahara Rie

Released in 1978.

This was Rie Nakahara’s debut song, showcasing her cool, no-nonsense charm.

Set against the backdrop of Tokyo’s bay area at midnight, it was a stylish kayōkyoku number by the golden duo of the time: lyrics by Takashi Matsumoto and music by Kyōhei Tsutsumi.
