Doo-wop is a genre considered one branch of R&B.

It was developed primarily by African Americans and flourished most in the 1950s, with The Platters being one of the most famous groups.

Performed in an ensemble similar to today’s a cappella groups, doo-wop in Japan was embodied by The King Tones.

Their soulful, decidedly un-Japanese vocals and the groove they created must have been shocking to Japan’s music industry at a time when doo-wop had yet to spread widely.

Permanent Fish, formed in Kobe, is sure to soothe you with the gentle vocals of their lead singer.

Their performances have been recognized overseas, and they made their major debut in South Korea in 2008.

A year after their debut, in November 2009, they won the 17th Korea Culture and Entertainment Awards’ Foreign Entertainer Award, proving their strong credentials.

They mainly released original songs centered on relaxed ballads.

Although they disbanded in 2019 to much regret, their voices will surely continue to shine forever through their works.

How High The MoonBROAD6

A dream collaboration between RAG FAIR and INSPi! BROAD6 is a group formed by members from these two leading a cappella groups who especially love jazz.

They sing jazz standards arranged for a cappella.

Their beautifully intricate choral work will impress music fans.

It’s the kind of feat only artists who’ve been at the forefront of the a cappella scene could pull off.

Highly recommended not only for jazz lovers, but also for those who’ve grown tired of pop a cappella—this will definitely be a refreshing inspiration.

Hello, goodbye.COLOR CREATION

COLOR CREATION, known by the nickname Karakuri, was a five-member male a cappella group active from 2017 to 2020.

The group included singers RIOSKE and KAZ, who are well-known from PELP!NS.

The path by which COLOR CREATION secured their major-label debut was quite unique: if two CDs they released sold over 5,000 copies, they would earn a major debut.

That same year, they successfully sold more than 5,000 copies and made their major-label debut.

Although they went on hiatus in 2020, they remain one of the groups that energized the a cappella scene.

SOLIDEMO is like a dream a cappella group, with every member tall and handsome.

Under the slogan “Japan-made artists shining across Asia,” they began their activities in 2013.

They earned a reputation for performance skills and visuals on par with overseas idols.

Their perfectly blended vocals, in particular, captured the hearts of many listeners, but the group sadly disbanded in 2022.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on each member’s solo activities going forward.

Did you know there are cafés called “utagoe kissa” (singing cafés)? They’re a bit different from karaoke bars or snack bars: they’re cafés where all the customers sing together in chorus.

An a cappella group closely connected with these singing cafés is Baby Boo.

They’re a five-member male group formed in 1996 who made their major debut in 2002.

Seeking to improve further, they began frequenting Tomoshibi, one of the oldest and most established utagoe kissa.

They released four albums supervised by Tomoshibi, which helped solidify their a cappella career.

In conclusion

I introduced some wonderful Japanese a cappella groups.

There were many, including artists at the forefront of the J-POP scene and groups who upload a cappella videos on YouTube.

A cappella, which lets you fully savor the beauty of the songs and their gorgeous harmonies, really does lift your spirits when you listen to it!
