Acid jazz masterpieces. Recommended popular tracks.

Acid jazz is a music genre that was born in the UK in the 1980s.

Many of you have probably heard the name.

However, since acid jazz blends various genres into jazz, the vibe can differ greatly from track to track, so I imagine few people can instantly recall its melody.

This time, I’ve picked out some classic acid jazz tracks for those people.

There are plenty of lesser-known songs as well, so even those who regularly listen to acid jazz will find recommendations here!

THE BRAND NEW HEAVIES – Stay This Way
Stay This WayThe Brand New Heavies

Formed in the 1980s as an instrumental acid jazz group.

They came into the spotlight and achieved commercial success with the 1991 album “The Brand New Heavies,” which featured vocalist N’Dea Davenport.

The FavoriteDirections In Groove

Needless to say, this is feel-good jazz-funk.

The true roots of acid jazz lie in instrumental tracks like this, led by a horn section in a funk style.

I do enjoy songs that put the focus on vocals and chorus, but using vocals in a supporting role in an instrumental piece, as in this track, feels quintessentially acid jazz.

Lift OffGroove Collective

This track is quintessential acid jazz, from the unison in the intro to the moment the vocals come in.

It’s the kind of song you want to listen to while sipping a drink outdoors at night.

You can feel the nighttime ocean.

The rhythm section has a big presence, and the solid groove is incredibly easy to lock into.

Twilight WorldSwing Out Sister

While it has an acid jazz instrumentation, the song carries a dark, emotional atmosphere.

I feel that Japanese R&B artists are imitating elements like those in this track.

It’s also very easy to listen to as pop, embedding a universally appealing sound that doesn’t force listeners to choose a specific genre.

Brooklyn Funk Essentials – Dance Or Die
Dance Or DieBrooklyn Funk Essentials

This track is characterized by a synth that takes the lead part.

Once the vocals come in, the style of hitting a memorable vocal phrase right at the start gives it a funky vibe.

The groove is distinctly funky, and the tight hits that appear at key moments are spot-on and very cool.

If you want to hear sophisticated, adult funk, Brooklyn Funk Essentials is the way to go.
