Collage on colorful washi paper

This is a stylish collage using Japanese calligraphy paper (hanshi).

You’ll need drawing paper, hanshi, scissors, glue, and paints or colored pencils.

First, paint the hanshi with various colors.

Be careful not to use too much water, as the hanshi can tear.

After it’s thoroughly dry, trim off the margins and cut out leaf shapes.

Then glue the leaves onto tree branches you’ve drawn on the drawing paper.

The marbled coloring creates a unique, beautiful texture that really catches the eye—perfect for brightening up Respect for the Aged Day as a striking wall decoration!

How about making a lucky-character collage—featuring auspicious characters like “福” (good fortune) or “祝” (congratulations)—for Respect for the Aged Day, using old magazines or flyer inserts you no longer read? Once you’ve chosen the character, type it on your computer and print it out.

Turn the paper over and trace the outline of the character with a red pen.

Cut out random pieces of colored sections (anything but black) from magazines and flyers, and paste them on the front side of the character.

After pasting, cut along the red outline on the back to shape it into the character.

Mount it on white drawing paper for a beautiful, textured collage.

It also looks great on colored paper!

Heart clover

Heart clover

How about making a heart-shaped clover that lifts your spirits using the paper quilling technique? It’s perfect as a little accent to accompany celebratory messages, like on a birthday card, so give it a try.

First, fold a thin strip of paper in half, then curl both ends to form a heart shape.

Next, take a strip about twice as long, curl it the same way to make another heart, and glue the smaller heart inside.

Make four of these, and your clover is complete! You can freely customize the colors and sizes to suit your purpose, so have fun with different arrangements.

Rose

Rose

When you think of beautiful, glamorous flowers, roses come to mind! Roses can be used in many ways, so let’s easily make them and enjoy paper quilling.

First, take a narrow strip of paper, wrap it around a tool like a nail or skewer two or three times, fold it at a right angle, then repeat wrapping two or three times to form the rose bloom.

Next, use green paper, roll it up, and shape it into leaves.

Combine these pieces and your rose is complete! Try making not only red roses, but also your favorite colors like blue or yellow.

Using trendy muted tones will also give it a sophisticated finish.

Paper fans are often used at glamorous parties and photo booths.

Their petal-like, spreading pattern is beautiful and brightens the atmosphere.

They’re made by gluing together accordion-folded paper and opening it into a circle.

You can easily customize them by changing the size or pattern of the paper.

Using washi, not just origami paper, can also evoke nostalgia for older adults.

Try making paper fans to match your decor theme—Japanese, Western, or anything else!

Made from scrap fabric! Easy owl

If you have some leftover fabric, why not make and display these easy owls as a Respect-for-the-Aged Day decoration? Once you create a pattern, it’s great for mass production! Just cut the fabric according to the template, sew it together, stuff it with batting, stitch the bottom closed, and finish by attaching the eyes—done! The expression changes depending on how you sew and stuff it, so each owl is one-of-a-kind, which is part of the charm.

Changing the fabric patterns and color combinations, or adapting them into brooches, would also be lovely.

The method is simple, so they’re quick and easy to make.

Four-leaf clovers are cute and considered lucky symbols.

How about making lots of them to celebrate Respect for the Aged Day? First, cut a sheet of origami paper into four squares, and fold each one into a triangle three times.

Next, make a slit along the third fold, leaving about 5 mm uncut.

Trim off the tip of the corner, open it up, and crease the cross-shaped folds firmly.

Apply glue beside the slit and join the edges to create a three-dimensional clover.

Finally, stamp with a bottle cap coated in white paint to make it even cuter and more festive!
