In recent years, he has also focused on television drama production and has been active across various fields, but for music lovers, his work as a lyricist is perhaps the most striking aspect.

Valentine KissKunikyo Sayuri

Sayuri Kokusho (Kokusho Sayuri) – Valentine Kiss
Valentine KissKunikyo Sayuri

A classic Valentine’s Day song by Sayuri Kokusho! It was released in 1986 as her solo debut single from the all-female idol group Onyanko Club, to which she belonged at the time.

The lyrics, which adorably depict a girl eagerly waiting for Valentine’s Day, perfectly match Kokusho’s fresh vocals.

The lyricist is, of course, Yasushi Akimoto, the creator of Onyanko Club.

You can really feel Akimoto’s sharp eye for detail in the lyrics, which capture a girl’s feelings of love with pinpoint accuracy.

Rie Kitahara of AKB48 is from Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture, and this song was released in 2008 as their 10th single.

Kitahara was selected for the lineup for the first time with this song and continued to be selected up through the 18th single.

She is currently also active as the captain of NGT48.

pedestrian overpassNogizaka 46

This song by Nogizaka46 is a moving piece themed around life’s choices and stepping into the future.

Through the image of a protagonist hesitating over whether to cross a pedestrian bridge in the season of wintry winds, it portrays the turmoil of making a decision.

Katsuhiko Sugiyama’s melody and Yasushi Akimoto’s lyrics blend beautifully, resulting in a delicate and emotional work.

Released on December 11, 2024, the track features Sakura Endo as the center, and among fans it sparked discussion as a possible answer song to “Kikkake.” It’s a perfect song for those standing at a crossroads in life or considering a new challenge.

Miwa Fujitani, who flourished as an actress and drew attention for her unique personality, also debuted as a singer—and this smash hit, “Ai ga Umareta Hi” (The Day Love Was Born), was produced by Yasushi Akimoto.

Released in 1994, the song was used as an insert track in the drama “Sono Uchi Kekkon Suru Kimi e,” starring Fujitani herself.

For people of that generation, it’s also a popular karaoke staple.

It’s a love ballad to a cherished person, overflowing with the feeling that “there’s no one in the world who could be better.”

This is Onyanko Club’s debut single, released in July 1985.

It reached as high as No.

It was also a song that was always performed at Onyanko Club’s concerts.

witnessAKB48

“Witness” is a song performed by members of AKB48 Team A, included in the setlist for their 6th stage, “Witness,” which ran from 2010 to 2012.

Many people likely associate idol songs with themes like exciting romance or bittersweet heartbreak.

However, this song carries a powerful message about peace: “We must not overlook the wars and conflicts that continue somewhere in the world even today; as witnesses to history, each of us must pass on these stories and consider what we can do to bring them to an end.”

HA!NMB48

One of NMB48’s charms is not only their cute, idol-like songs, but also the many cool, edgy tracks they have.

I also love how their dances include flashy moves, and their music videos sometimes feature kimono-inspired costumes that weave in a sexy, mature vibe.

The touch of a yakuza-esque, slightly “bad” element is unusual and makes them interesting, too.
