Masterpieces of ambient music. Recommended popular tracks.

Ambient music—a term popularized by the English composer Brian Eno—is a genre often referred to as “environmental music,” though its definition is quite ambiguous.

Put simply, rather than music that reaches out directly to the listener, it’s said to be music that gently envelops them; yet due to that ambiguity, its styles vary widely.

This time, I’ve selected some classic tracks of ambient music.

Please take your time and enjoy until the end.

Unforeseen EventsDavid Behrman

Here’s an ambient music recommendation for jazz lovers: Unforeseen Events.

It was composed by David Parman, known as a pioneer of computer music.

He also has a background as a minimalist composer, but in this piece he weaves in elements of jazz, resulting in a composition with extremely dynamic sonic movement.

If you’re already familiar with his work, you’ll discover a new side of him—definitely give it a listen.

Lake LighceousIasos

Iasos, an artist from San Francisco, is known as a leading figure in the New Age genre—music focused on meditation and relaxation.

His ambient pieces are infused with strong New Age elements and crafted to create an exceptionally soothing atmosphere.

Among them, “Lake Lighceous” is particularly catchy, evoking the feeling of surrendering yourself to a healing spring straight out of a video game.

Juliana Barwick, a U.S.-born artist highly acclaimed for performances using a device known as a looper—often used in beatboxing—has captivated many with her stylish and catchy performances, earning her top-tier recognition as an ambient and new age musician.

Her track “In Light ft.

Jónsi” is known as one of her signature songs, crafted into an accessible, dreamlike piece of ambient music.

Fib01aKeith Fullerton Whitman

Keith Fullerton Whitman is a U.S.-born composer known for drill ’n’ bass and Krautrock.

While this ranking generally features relatively melodic ambient music, his tracks are different.

True to the term “ambient,” his music places the focus on the environment itself.

As a result, his works feel less like conventional music and more like art.

“Fib01a” is a masterpiece that encapsulates his unique character.

For listeners of mainstream music, even classic ambient music can feel like a high hurdle.

For those people, I recommend Om Rama.

It’s ambient music crafted with flavors that evoke African music and Afro-Cuban styles, and because it’s centered on vocals, I think it’s very easy to listen to.

It’s a must-check especially for fans of Black music such as R&B, soul, and funk.

Joe’s HarpFolke Rabe & Jan Bark

If you want to boost your concentration with ambient music, I recommend Joe’s Harp.

Created by Folke Rabe and Jan Bark, this piece has a profoundly mystical quality that evokes traditional Mongolian music.

With interwoven throat singing that can sound dissonant at times and like enchanting harmonies at others, its composition is deeply soothing and should quickly elevate your focus.

It’s also a great pick if you prefer ambient music without strong quirks.

Avant-garde music such as noise and ambient tends not to be widely appreciated and is similarly not very well known.

However, Oneohtrix Point Never, who composed “Lost But Never Alone,” is an exception.

His avant-garde musical approach has influenced many composers and artists.

This track is one of his finest works, notable for its melancholy atmosphere reminiscent of Daft Punk’s “Within.”
