A masterpiece of an answer song. A song that weaves feelings—a love song.

Answer songs are created as responses to original songs.

This is a unique genre that draws attention as “sequels to songs,” featuring many love songs and narrative-driven tracks that often center on differences in perspective between men and women.

In addition to music’s charm of allowing countless interpretations—one for every listener—one of the joys of answer songs is the new discoveries they offer: realizing, beyond what you felt from the original track, that there were such feelings and stories behind it!

We’ll introduce not only the classics but also relatively new tracks, carefully picked along the way.

You might just get hooked on the worldview that connects artists’ intentions!

Masterpieces of answer songs. Songs that weave feelings—love songs (1–10)

Kaiji No. 101suupaa beruzu

Super Bell’z, known for their railway-themed songs, created “Kaiji 101-go” as an answer song to Hunters’ “Azusa 2-go.” The lyrics showcase their unabashed railfan spirit, and the single even includes a cover of “Azusa 2-go” as the B-side, clearly conveying their respect for the original.

Hey, I’ll do my best.KinKi Kids

A medium-tempo number from a 2004 single that’s wrapped in a heartwarming vibe.

The harmony of KinKi Kids is absolutely fantastic and really gives you energy! This song just glides smoothly into your ears.

It’s actually a male-perspective version of DREAMS COME TRUE’s “MARRY ME?” with lyrics by Miwa Yoshida and music by Masato Nakamura.

Like “Hey! Minna Genki Kai?” these warm songs truly match KinKi Kids, and I feel they reflect the duo’s personalities so beautifully.

The original song is “Ichō” by the same singer.

“Ichō” is about a lover who falls ill and passes away, while “Hane” looks back on memories, unable to overcome the sorrow.

Both songs also share the common trait of borrowing motifs from classical music.

silhouetteKobukuro

A sparkling, refreshing sound that’s quintessentially Kobukuro.

While their long-running hit classic “Eien ni Tomo ni” is told from the groom’s perspective, “Silhouette” takes the bride’s point of view, making it a wedding song where the feelings of the two overlap.

Originally written for a friend of Kobukuro, the song was later included on their 2011 single “Ano Taiyo ga, Kono Sekai o Terashi Tsuzukeru Youni.” It’s a wish brimming with happiness—an answer-style love song that makes you want to keep the pure feelings expressed in it, no matter how much time passes.

The continuation of a dreamCHEMISTRY

A 2017 single released as a double A-side with “Windy.” The lyrics are by Kiyoshi Matsuo, the maestro of mellow who is also known as the “creator of CHEMISTRY.” It’s based on their smash hit “PIECES OF A DREAM,” incorporates titles from their early tracks, and expresses their resolve in restarting.

The music is composed by Masaya Wada, who has worked on many LDH group songs.

The chorus lines and its mature groove are irresistible, making it a wonderfully comfortable track that will have your body swaying before you know it.

A unit composed of multiple creators including Yorushika’s n-buna, Sangatsu no Phantasia.

This track is an answer song to “Itsuka tenshi ni natte arui wa aoi tori ni natte Adam to Eve ni natte arienai nara,” which is also included on their 2020 album Blue Pop wa Naruyamanai, and it was born from Mia’s novel “8:33, Natsu ga Mata Kagayaku.” The way the words fit together and the rhythm built on contrasts feel fresh and invigorating.

I’ve heard that this “Koi wa Kirai da” serves as an ending, and within its gentle atmosphere you can sense the future.

HOPETENDRE

TENDRE, who skillfully plays a variety of instruments and is also active as a songwriter and producer.

Released in 2020, this track is an answer song to his own piece “LIFE,” setting scenes from everyday life to a gentle, laid-back melody.

The lyrics carry a hope that seems to connect the sentiments of “LIFE.” Wrapped in the comfort of a perfectly balanced arrangement that feels like the only right choice, it warms your heart as you listen.

It makes you want to relax and listen to it in nature on a day off.
