[J-Pop/Rock] A roundup of bands with cool singing bassists

When you think of someone playing an instrument and singing in a rock band, most people picture a guitarist-vocalist.

In reality, it’s most common for the guitarist to stand at the front, and it’s relatively rare for members of the rhythm section—like the bassist or drummer—to handle lead vocals.

That’s precisely why bands with a bassist as the lead vocalist tend to be distinctive and unique.

In this article, we highlight Japanese bands that feature a bass-vocalist, introducing them across different eras and genres.

You might even discover that the singer in a band you love has actually been singing while playing the bass!

The rough vibe is quintessentially rock ’n’ roll—The Pees are also a three-piece band with bass on vocals.

Atsuyuki Oki’s vocal style brimming with rock spirit and his bass that drives the rhythm have a kind of “hard-to-copy charm” that’s different from sheer technique.

They may not be widely known to the general public, but many musicians openly cite them as an influence.

Formed at Osaka University of Arts, this three-piece mixed-gender comic punk band has now made a name for itself nationwide.

Their songs—built on simple arrangements and irresistibly catchy melodies that seem to max out the “catchiness” parameter—capture widely relatable everyday moments shared among young people, earning them strong support.

The striking interplay of their male–female twin vocals is highly appealing, and in particular, Aribobo’s high-tone voice on bass and vocals grabs listeners’ hearts and doesn’t let go.

When it comes to Ling Tosite Sigure, the focus often falls on TK’s guitar-vocal performance, but the bass-vocalist 345 shines with an appeal that’s every bit as compelling.

Her piercing high-tone voice is every bit the match for TK’s vocals.

On top of that, each member’s exceptional musicianship is a major draw, and their overwhelmingly high-quality songs captivate countless fans.

HOT DOGTHE BAWDIES

When you first heard their songs, weren’t you surprised to learn the singers were Japanese artists? Their band sound evokes classic garage rock, and above all, you were surely blown away by bassist-vocalist ROY’s voice! Their funky, rock ’n’ roll backbone is rooted in various forms of Black music.

However, it turns out ROY chose to be a singing bassist under the unexpected influence of Akihiro Namba from Hi-STANDARD!

Statementshifuku poncho

Formed in 2022, Shifuku Poncho is a Nagoya-based three-piece rock band with an average age of 19, delivering Japanese rock that blends breezy pop sensibilities with an alternative edge.

Their energetic sound—belting out rock ’n’ roll at full throttle—shines alongside the tight bond the three members have shared since high school.

Since releasing a digital single in December 2023, they’ve been steadily advancing toward the major scene, earning praise at prominent events in 2024, including an appearance at TOKYO CALLING 2024.

Rion, who handles vocals and bass, anchors the band with a soaring voice and rock-solid bass playing—truly a rising star among singing bassists.

With lyrics that capture youth in a genuine, relatable way, their music is set to resonate with listeners seeking strength and solace in sound.

Formed in 2007, Reaction the Butta is a rock trio highly praised for both their musicality and live performances.

In 2009, they won the top prize at TEENS ROCK IN HITACHINAKA and went on to perform at ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL, marking a striking start to their career.

The bass lines crafted by Naoto Sasaki, the vocalist and bassist, support the songs rhythmically and melodically while blending seamlessly with his powerful singing.

In 2014, they won RO69 JACK and have since appeared at numerous festivals.

In 2018, one of their music videos was nominated at one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals, drawing attention beyond the music scene as well.

With a powerful bass-vocal lead and sophisticated songwriting, they’re a recommended band for rock fans seeking intense live performances.

DAYBREAKotoko

Otokogumi is a four-member rock band formed in 1988 by members of Johnny & Associates.

With Kazuya Takahashi on bass and vocals, the band has a charmingly pop sound, partly thanks to having a keyboardist among its members.

It’s also nice that, somewhat unusually for a singing bassist, he plays fingerstyle.

Their masculine sound—true to their name—really pumps you up.

By the way, they actually resumed activities on a limited basis from July 2022 to August 2023.
