the GazettE is a band formed in 2002.

Although they struggled for a while to attract large audiences to their live shows after their formation, they went on to hold a solo concert at Tokyo Dome in 2010 and embarked on a world tour in 2013, becoming one of the representative visual kei bands of the 2000s.

Their debut song was the 2002 single “Wakaremichi.” The way the melody flows into the chorus conveys a distinctive sense of aesthetics.

Many of you might recognize it from the gum commercial that opened with footage of monkeys headbanging.

It’s Maximum the Hormone’s “Benjo Sandal Dance.” It’s an incredibly catchy track that makes your body—no, your head—start banging on its own.

It was also used as a support theme song for the movie Kick-Ass 2.

BE-BOP-HIGHSCHOOLNagayama Miho

A masterpiece of 1980s idol pop created by the ultimate Showa-era duo: lyrics by Takashi Matsumoto and music by Kyohei Tsutsumi! Released in 1985 as the theme song for Be-Bop High School, in which Miho Nakayama—then 15 and known as “Miporin”—starred as the heroine, it became a hit alongside the film.

Together with JINGI: Aishite Moraimasu, the theme for the sequel Be-Bop High School: Koko Yotaro Elegy composed by Tetsuya Komuro, it’s a song that many look back on with fond nostalgia.

Nakayama’s charming performance, portraying a pure yet strong-willed girl, epitomizes the classic Showa idol style—and it’s truly wonderful.

This is an arrangement of the piece “Days That Won’t Return” by Joe Hisaishi himself.

Although it wasn’t used in the actual film, it vividly conjures up scenes.

If you love this work, you’ll be moved to tears when you hear it.

The film Porco Rosso, while on the surface having a slapstick, action-comedy vibe with a brisk pace that even children can enjoy, is truly wonderful for the atmosphere of background music like this, the story and the protagonist’s rugged charm, and the many facets woven throughout that you can only fully relate to after becoming an adult.

The song I want you to listen to while thinking of the hero you admired is “Best of Hero.” It was released in 2006 by singer Mai Kuraki, who has worked on numerous tie-in songs, and it was used as the theme song for the drama “Gachi Baka!” A gentle synth tone resonates over a rhythmic tempo, and her supple, beautiful voice will gently give you a push forward.

The heartfelt lyrics that evoke a grand theme are another part of its charm.
