Named one of Brazil’s top 10 guitarists by Guitar Player (Brazil edition) in 1998 and praised by Rolling Stone Brasil in 2012, he also shines with stories of performing alongside Steve Vai and appearing at Rock in Rio.

Duas ContasGaroto

An innovator who fused jazz and classical music with Brazil’s core traditions of choro and samba.

Born in São Paulo in 1915, Garoto was a master of stringed instruments—beyond guitar, he also played banjo and cavaquinho.

He began performing in the late 1920s and made his recording debut in the 1930s.

His signature piece Gente Humilde and the march São Paulo Quatrocentão became major hits in 1954 as part of a commemorative project, selling around 700,000 copies.

He also earned recognition as a composer, winning a prize in a 1954 competition.

In 1939 he traveled to the United States with Carmen Miranda’s group Bando da Lua, gaining attention through tie-ins with Broadway and film appearances.

With a delicate touch—short nails on nylon strings—he crystallized the pulse of samba on the guitar.
