As the title suggests, “Chocolate Cosmos” refers to a variety of cosmos flower with a chocolate color, whose flower language means “the end of love.” It’s a love ballad that portrays, from a woman’s perspective, the complex feelings toward a beloved partner with whom she must part.

Akizakura, released by Momoe Yamaguchi in 1977 with music provided by Masashi Sada, became known as a classic.

The song was included on Masashi Sada’s 1978 album Watashihanasyu, where he performed it as a self-cover.

Depicting the exchange between a daughter who will be married tomorrow and her mother, the song is quietly poignant yet rich in vivid imagery.

Deeply moving and selected for the “100 Best Japanese Songs,” it is renowned as one of Japan’s representative pieces.

The lyrics and music were written by Hotaka Yamashita, who was a member until 2021 and played guitar and harmonica.
