A roundup of cool drum-vocal bands: vocalists who sing while drumming.

Drum vocals… It might not be a term you hear often, but even with a little thought, you can easily imagine how challenging it is, right?

Overseas, bands where the drummer handles vocals—like the Carpenters or the Beatles—are well-known, but what about here in Japan?

You can probably think of a few groups, but in this article we’ll dig a bit deeper!

We’ll introduce bands where the drummer serves as the lead vocalist.

Feast your eyes on these musicians with incredible technique!

As a two-piece band from Kyoto, this lineup is defined by the overwhelming presence of Natsuko Fukuda, who sings while playing the drums.

Formed at Ritsumeikan University in 2010, they became the current two-piece in August 2012.

In 2016, they released their first nationally distributed work, the mini-album “The Last Desperate Struggle,” and in 2022 they independently put out their first full-length album, “BOMB.” Their unique sound—described as “Hannari Sumo Dream Noise Pop,” driven by roaring guitar and powerful drums—is a major draw, and in 2024 they even embarked on an Australia tour.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience an energetic live performance that you wouldn’t believe comes from just two members!

A three-piece rock band formed in Fukuoka in 2012, they build a distinctive world centered around drummer-vocalist Nao.

Their sound fuses Showa-era kayōkyoku with garage rock and early punk, complemented by horror-tinged makeup and theatrical performances that leave a strong impression.

Their 2013 album “KUBI-FURI NINGYO SYNDROME” sold out its 1,000-copy run, and they made their major-label debut with King Records in 2018.

While they have no official awards to date, they’ve steadily grown their fanbase, selling out more than 100 shows on nationwide tours.

They’re the perfect band for anyone who enjoys idiosyncratic rock sounds and stage-like live performances.

In conclusion

In addition to bands where the drummer handles lead vocals, we also introduced solo projects that perform in a band format.

Drums are a rhythm instrument, and playing them uses the whole body, so singing at the same time is quite difficult.

For that reason, many people may feel a strong admiration for drummer-vocalists.

Take this opportunity to dive into their songs, where you can feel both cool beats and a strong sense of melody.
