A lovely family song

[Family Songs] Famous songs about older brothers. Recommended popular tracks.

When it comes to “songs about family,” many are dedicated to parents, but it’s surprisingly hard to find tracks themed around thanking an older brother.

So in this feature, we’re focusing on exactly that and introducing songs that fit the bill.

We’ve put together pieces that carry messages to an older brother who’s a little further along in life, as well as works that highlight familial love.

Why not use the songs listed in this article as inspiration to put those feelings—ones that are hard to express honestly in everyday life—into music and send them his way?

YO BROTHER!BOOGIE MAN

Let’s & GO ED 1 – YO BROTHER!
YO BROTHER!BOOGIE MAN

The ending theme of the anime “Bakusō Kyōdai Let’s & Go!!,” which aired on the TV Tokyo network from 1996 to 1998.

It’s a humorous song portraying the protagonist brothers—anyone with siblings will find themselves nodding along to these classic sibling moments.

The affectionate Kansai dialect gives it a heartwarming touch.

A track from the sixth album, “DESKTOP.” The lyrics twist and grow stranger as the song goes on, deepening the mystery, yet the chorus somehow leaves you with a warm feeling—an intriguing piece.

Families can be tricky when it comes to boundaries—get too close and it can be annoying—but listening to this song might make even those everyday moments feel endearing.

Takeyama Pistol’s “Forever Young” is a song that can cheer up an older brother who’s feeling a bit worn out.

Released in 2017, it was used as the ending theme for the drama “Byplayers: What if Six Supporting Actors Lived Together in a Share House?” The big brother who seemed nothing but cool when we were kids might sometimes show an uncool side after being battered by society.

But then and now, he’s still cool in the eyes of his younger siblings, right? Let’s give a gentle push to his weary back and tell him, “You’ll always be cool, big bro.”

Lyricist Ryoko Moriyama and composers BEGIN created this masterpiece, which was released in 2001 as the B-side to the single “Satokibi Batake.” Rimi Natsukawa’s cover is especially well known.

While it’s a track distinguished by her clear, soaring high notes, the lyrics are a poignant work written in memory of Ryoko Moriyama’s older brother, who passed away at a young age.

I wonder why I was born into this family, why I’m here as my brother’s younger sibling… It’s recommended for times when you want to reflect on where you belong.

It’s a classic song that’s also very popular as an insert track or performance at weddings.

Bank Band’s cover is famous too.

This is a well-known classic by Kaguya-hime, a folk group that epitomizes the Showa era.

Sung from an older brother’s perspective about his beloved sister’s marriage, it’s a tear-jerker you can’t listen to without crying.

I also recommend the cover by Tin Pan Alley, the musical unit consisting of Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, Tatsuo Hayashi, and Masataka Matsutoya.

A Bouquet for YouUtada Hikaru

Siblings are a unique presence, different from both father and mother, and closer to you than anyone else.

They clearly see your strengths and weaknesses—and sometimes sides of you that even you don’t know yourself (they’ll quickly notice when you’ve had your heart broken, too).

With that in mind, think of your beloved older brother and listen closely.
