Respect for the Aged Day: Elevate the atmosphere with handmade touches! A roundup of lovely decoration ideas (1–10)
paper fanNEW!

By making them in various colors and sizes, you can easily decorate the venue! Cut a rectangular sheet of construction paper in half, then accordion-fold each piece.
Once done, glue them together to form a loop.
Prepare a piece of thick paper (card stock) that matches the circumference of the circle you’ll create with the construction paper, place the looped paper inside it, and press the center to open it up.
Glue a circle-cut piece of paper to the center, then remove the thick paper around the circumference to finish! When making larger sizes, also attach a circular piece of paper to the center on the back.
By sticking them in various places at random, you’ll create a stylish venue.
Wall decoration – Crane

Cranes are a symbol of longevity, right? With the wish that seniors will stay healthy and live long, how about making crane wall decorations for Respect for the Aged Day? Prepare four colors of construction paper: white, black, red, and yellow.
Use white for the crane’s body, black for the patterns and eyes, red for the head marking, and yellow for the beak.
Simply combine and paste these pieces together to complete the crane.
You can make many and decorate a lot, or create one large crane—both are great options! You could also draw the eyes and patterns with a marker instead of using construction paper.
Folding fans and paper fans

Fans that spread out in an auspicious, widening shape are popular as lucky charms and gifts.
How about making and displaying such fans together with paper fans? The process for both fans and paper fans is the same: fold them in an accordion.
For the fan, before you start folding, attach a strip of paper down the center to represent the ribs.
Prepare two accordion-folded pieces each for both the fan and the paper fan, and glue them together.
For the fan, open it into a shape close to a half-circle.
For the paper fan, open it all the way around into a full circle, glue the ends together, and it’s done.
Attach a string and hang them up for display!
Chrysanthemum flowers made with origami and colored construction paper

Chrysanthemums are often chosen as celebratory flowers for Respect-for-the-Aged Day, either as gifts or decorations.
So why not make chrysanthemum flowers as decorations for the occasion? This idea uses two sheets of origami paper to create one chrysanthemum.
Fold the paper in half, open it, and then fold the top and bottom edges to meet the center crease.
Fold it in half again to make a long, narrow strip like a band.
Round off both ends like petals, then open the paper and use the creases to accordion-fold it.
The key here is to only crease at the center.
Make two of these parts, layer them, gather them at the center, and glue the ends to form a circle.
Finally, attach a circular piece to the center of the flower to finish.
By keeping the creases only at the center, the petals will spread out softly.

How about some wall decoration ideas featuring cranes and turtles? Simply sticking cranes and turtles made from origami or colored paper on the wall can easily create an auspicious, traditional Japanese atmosphere.
Using papers in a variety of colors will make the space bright and lively, naturally lifting the spirits of those who see it.
Since cranes and turtles symbolize longevity and good health, they are perfect for birthday celebrations and will likely be appreciated by older guests as well.
It might also be nice to make them little by little together with everyone before the party.
The handmade touch adds warmth and can spark conversation.
Definitely consider giving it a try.
balloon standNEW!

Here’s an idea using balloon stands you can even get at 100-yen shops.
You can easily create decorations that set a celebratory mood.
First, place confetti balloons—sparkly ones with paper confetti inside—on the stand, and combine them with pastel-colored balloons for a soft, gentle feel.
Adding ribbons gives movement and dimension, making each balloon look more glamorous.
By adjusting the height and color balance, you create a cohesive look throughout the space, and it’s easy to brighten up walls and tabletops.
Preparation is quick, so it’s an easy option to use for birthday parties and events at senior care facilities.
balloon flowerNEW!

A cute flower you can make with just balloons in various colors and a paper plate! Cut five slits in the paper plate and make a hole in the center.
Then simply tuck the tied ends of inflated balloons into the slits.
It’s easiest to start inserting the balloons from the center.
Try arranging the balloons however you like—change the color of the center versus the outer balloons, or make every balloon a different color.
When hanging it on the wall, secure a rubber band to the wall using masking tape shaped like a sharp sign (#), then thread the rubber band through one of the flower’s balloon “petals” to help keep it from falling.
