[For Seniors] Recommended Mother's Day Recreations (11–20)
Mother’s Day Exercise

In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re introducing Mother’s Day exercises that use the body and mouth.
In the body exercise, you use your hands and feet to form the characters for “Mother’s Day.” It can be done while seated, making it easy to try.
In the oral exercise, say the words “Mother’s Day” while opening your mouth wide to work the muscles around the mouth.
By placing your hand on your abdomen as you speak, you can focus on your breathing as well, which provides a healthy stimulus.
Please give it a try!
bubble foot bath

Here’s a foam foot bath you can do at the bedside.
It cleans effectively and can also help you relax.
Put some body soap, etc., into a plastic bag and whip it up to make foam.
Place one foot into the foamy bag and wash it as if giving a massage.
When you’re done, wipe off the foam with a wet towel, then dry thoroughly with a dry towel—that’s it.
It’s especially useful on days when taking a bath is difficult, so give this foam foot bath a try.
Applying a moisturizer at the end can also help prevent dryness.
Kabei: Our Mother

Set against the turbulent early Showa era, Kabei: Our Mother is a film that portrays family bonds and a mother’s love.
Released in 2008, it was directed by Yoji Yamada and stars Sayuri Yoshinaga.
The depiction of a mother who remains cheerful and forward-looking even amid the hardships of wartime gives viewers courage and hope.
By also portraying political offenders and the lead-up to the Pacific War, the film vividly conveys how people of the time thought and lived.
It’s a work that lets us reflect on a mother’s love alongside Japan’s history.
My Mother’s Memory

Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Yasushi Inoue, the film ‘Chronicle of My Mother’ portrays the bond between parent and child and the love for a mother through life with an ailing parent.
It won the Special Grand Prix of the Jury at the Montreal World Film Festival.
When screening it, we recommend using subtitles to make it easier for older viewers to follow, and scheduling breaks or segmenting the viewing time, as sitting for long periods can be tiring.
After the screening, set aside time to share impressions and discuss the film.
Makeup

Let’s give mom, the star of Mother’s Day, a stunning makeover with makeup! When she sees her transformed look in the mirror, she’ll be surprised to see a different side of herself—and surely delighted.
After prepping her skin with toner and moisturizer, carefully create a flawless base with primer and foundation.
Next, fill in her eyebrows a bit bolder, then layer on highlighter, eyeshadow, and blush.
Finally, apply a bright lip color that makes her whole face look radiant, and her stylish Mother’s Day makeup is complete!
concert

Hosting a concert that brings live performances of nostalgic songs and movie music is also highly recommended! Songs you sang in childhood, the music that was popular in your youth, and the pop tunes you listened to with your children—these memorable pieces you heard repeatedly have been deeply imprinted in your memory without you even realizing it.
There are many ways to organize such events: invite professional musicians active in the community, or have staff members with musical experience perform.
Hearing warm, live music can bring back memories from those days, and some people may even be moved to tears.

Carnation made with origami
No matter how old you are, receiving a bouquet of flowers is always delightful, isn’t it? In honor of Mother’s Day in May, how about making a bouquet of carnations out of origami? Carnations are characterized by their soft petals with fluttery, frilled edges.
Try crumpling the origami paper for the carnation flowers first, then cutting it with pinking shears.
Using pinking shears will give the cut edges a zigzag finish.
Use about four sheets of origami petals to create each carnation flower.
Make the stem and leaves from construction paper and attach the carnation blossom to complete it.
If you make several carnations and arrange them into a bouquet, you’ll have a truly lovely piece.
Older adults may also find themselves reminiscing about Mother’s Day as they craft their carnations.
