[For Seniors] Summer Wall Decorations: A Collection of Fun, Eye-Catching Motifs
Many senior care facilities may be thinking it’s about time to switch their wall displays to something summery.
In this article, we introduce summer wall decor ideas for older adults.
We’ve gathered projects that evoke summer—like the ocean, morning glories, fireworks, and Tanabata—so please give them a try.
Even simple ideas can be impactful if you make many of the same piece and display them together.
For example, sunflowers, hydrangeas, and festival lanterns are perfect for this.
Of course, combining several summery motifs can also make for a delightful wall display.

stained glass

How about turning a summer-themed picture into a stained-glass-style wall decoration? One way to make it is by using aluminum foil.
Draw a picture that evokes summer on transparent cellophane and color it in.
Once the picture is finished, attach crumpled-and-smoothed aluminum foil to the back, and it’s done.
The foil’s sparkle creates a stained-glass-like shine.
It’s also recommended to let older adults draw their pictures freely.
It’s easy to do, so give it a try!
Hibiscus and Sea Creatures
By combining vibrant hibiscus flowers with sea creatures, this wall decoration lets you enjoy the feel of the summer ocean while staying indoors! Basically, it’s a craft that involves cutting and pasting origami or patterned paper.
You can use any sea creatures you like—whales, fish, jellyfish, seagulls, and more.
Give the hibiscus petals a curled shape using the blade of your scissors, and make a single slit in each sea creature to transform them into a more three-dimensional finish—definitely give it a try! Using not only solid colors but also patterned origami for the sea creatures can create a more glamorous and stylish look.
Hula Girls and Hibiscus
How about a wall decoration with hula girls and hibiscus flowers that makes you feel like you’ve escaped to a warm southern island? It’s a great idea to give older adults—who may find travel difficult—a taste of a trip and a bit of summer mood.
Use construction paper or origami to make hula girls dancing the hula, along with lots of hibiscus flowers, and create a lively wall display! For the hibiscus blooms, it’s also recommended to take apart Hawaiian leis or artificial flowers sold at 100-yen shops and reuse the pieces.
You can even incorporate them into parts of the hula girls’ outfits.
And while admiring this wall decoration, why not give hula dancing a try yourself?
Melon wall decoration
One of the fruits that are in season in August is melon.
So how about making a melon as an August craft? First, prepare white copy paper and green construction paper, and crumple them into a ball using hand strength.
Once the construction paper is crumpled, open it up, apply glue to the back, and stick it over the copy paper as a cover.
Now you’ve made the base of the melon.
Next, paste thin strips of white paper on top to resemble the melon’s pattern, and attach a stem at the end to finish.
Some older adults may find it difficult to apply hand strength as they wish.
With this activity, they can enjoy it like a game while also working on functional improvement.
Tanabata

Some elder care facilities may hold Tanabata events every year.
Because it’s an annual tradition, many staff members probably struggle to come up with new wall decoration ideas.
The classic choices are Tanabata ornaments and the Milky Way, but how about adding a displayed line from the children’s song “Tanabata-sama”? It can also be fun to make parts like bamboo decorations together with the seniors in a lively group activity.
On July 7th, during your Tanabata event, be sure to let everyone fully enjoy the festive spirit by singing “Tanabata-sama” together along with the wall decorations!
Trellis and morning glory wreath

How about a wreath decorated with origami morning glories and a lattice wall? Although the origami morning glory has a delicate look, it’s made from a single sheet of paper.
By rounding the folded corners with a bamboo skewer, you can recreate softly curved petals.
Origami engages the mind while moving the hands skillfully, which can help stimulate the brain.
With simple steps—attaching parts like the lattice, leaves, and tendrils in addition to the morning glory—it’s a project that’s easy for older adults to try.
The finished piece can be taken home or displayed at the facility.
tanzaku (paper strip for writing wishes)
I think many elder care facilities display tanzaku with everyone’s wishes written on them for Tanabata.
Tying them to bamboo is lovely, but arranging the tanzaku across an entire wall and making it a wall decoration is also recommended.
Plain rectangular slips might feel a bit dull, so how about adding a creative touch to the tanzaku? You could use colorful construction paper, cut out star shapes, make collage-style designs with origami, or decorate them with washi tape.
A wall display lined with cute tanzaku is sure to lift everyone’s spirits.
