[For Seniors] Today’s Recommended Activity: Fun and Engaging

At day service centers and nursing care facilities, recreational activities are often held, right?

There are various activities tailored to the seasons and events, but this time we’ve gathered recreation ideas related to today.

They can be a great opportunity to learn about lesser-known events and anniversaries, and they might make for a unique change of pace from your usual activities.

We’ll update our recommended activities daily, so use them as a reference and have fun engaging and energizing your seniors!

Making Umeboshi (Japanese pickled plums)

Making Umeboshi (Japanese pickled plums)

June 6 is said to be Ume Day, established by the Kishu Ume Association.

When June comes, supermarkets and home centers line their shelves with a variety of products for making umeboshi, don’t they? Making umeboshi is also a great recommendation for June events at senior facilities.

Some older adults may have made umeboshi every year.

If they have a plum tree at home, some may even have started with the “ume work” of removing the stems from the harvested plums.

If you host a umeboshi-making event, older adults could serve as instructors and really liven up the occasion.

A stroll activity to the nearby park

When the weather turns warm and mild, I highly recommend a stroll activity.

In fact, going for a walk is packed with benefits! Exposure to sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D, which strengthens bones.

Planning a date and destination for an outing engages orientation skills—the ability to understand your situation—while getting ready to go out and following a route use executive functions, the abilities needed to achieve goals.

If you’re walking, you can also expect various effects such as maintaining muscle strength and improving circulation.

Even in a wheelchair, spending the day differently than usual can refresh both body and mind, so please give it a try.

Open a coffee shop

There are surely some older adults who “like cafés but find it hard to go alone.” In that case, why not open a one-day café during recreation time? Serving café-style drinks that they don’t usually get to enjoy—like Viennese coffee, cream soda, or coffee floats—can make them feel as if they’ve time-traveled back to their café-going days, allowing them to fully enjoy the Mother’s Day recreation.

barbecue

One outdoor activity I highly recommend for seniors to join casually is a barbecue.

Set up tents in places like a care facility’s garden or parking lot, or in a park, and enjoy some fun activities.

In addition to grilling and eating meat, vegetables, and fish, offering sweets like marshmallows is also a great idea.

Hosting events such as a singing contest or a magic show will make it even more exciting.

Gathering in a setting different from everyday life also provides an opportunity for seniors to deepen communication with one another.

Japanese-style parfait with matcha mizuyokan and brown sugar syrup

Let’s try making a Japanese-style parfait topped with kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup) over soft matcha mizu-yokan.

You can use store-bought matcha mizu-yokan, and kits that include the ingredients make it easy to prepare.

These days, you can enjoy parfaits casually at family restaurants and cafes, and even supermarkets sell cup parfaits.

However, there was a time when parfaits weren’t so readily available and were considered an occasional luxury.

Some older adults might still feel that way about parfaits.

During a snack-making activity where you make parfaits, why not ask people what kind of image or impressions they have of parfaits? It could spark a lively conversation.

Mother’s Day event

Even amid the COVID-19 pandemic, make it vibrant with roses and carnations! Mother’s Day Event ♪ [Good Time Living Kōrigaoka]
Mother’s Day event

Mother’s Day in 2025 falls on May 11.

It can feel a bit embarrassing to put words of gratitude into voice, but on this day, why not express your appreciation to your mother? First and foremost, you can’t go wrong with carnations.

When giving your gift, it’s also nice to take a commemorative photo together.

Decorate the table with a bright floral arrangement, and at tea time, let her enjoy cake with the elegance of nobility.

For dinner, serve dishes with an extra special touch.

These heartfelt gestures will surely become cherished memories.

In senior care facilities, infection-control measures can often make visits difficult, but the thoughtfulness of the staff will surely be appreciated.

Foot bath with iris-infused water

On Children's Day, let's take a shobu (iris) bath! For Children's Day footbaths, make it a shobu (iris) bath.
Foot bath with iris-infused water

While Tango no Sekku is known as Children’s Day, its original meaning—warding off evil and praying for good health—brings blessings to everyone.

So today, we’d like to introduce a foot bath using sweet flag (shobu).

All you need is a large container, hot water, and shobu.

That’s it.

Fill the container with hot water and float the shobu on top.

Since the leaves could potentially irritate the skin, chopping them into small pieces and placing them in a mesh bag allows you to enjoy it safely.

The expected benefits include promoting circulation, relieving fatigue, strengthening the internal organs, easing sensitivity to cold, and alleviating stiff shoulders, making it especially pleasing for older adults.

You can find shobu at supermarkets or florists, so please give it a try.
