Unless the whole world becomes happy, individual happiness is impossible.Kenji Miyazawa
These are words by Kenji Miyazawa, the poet and writer of children’s stories famous for the poem “Be Not Defeated by the Rain.” Kenji Miyazawa is also known for works such as Night on the Galactic Railroad, The Restaurant of Many Orders, and Matasaburo of the Wind.
All humans live by supporting one another.
Even if we feel as though we live on our own, it’s hard to completely separate ourselves from others.
In other words, unless those around us are happy and the entire world becomes happy, our own happiness cannot truly exist.
Not only do we want our own happiness, but we also want the people around us and people across the world to be happy—these are words to keep close to heart.
It is the heart that makes a world without amusements into an interesting one.Shinsaku Takasugi
“Make an unamusing world amusing”…
It is said that Shinsaku Takasugi composed only this upper line.
Shinsaku Takasugi was a feudal retainer of the Choshu domain at the end of the Edo period and is known as the founder of the Kiheitai militia.
He fell ill before fulfilling his ambitions, and this is the verse he composed at that time.
The lower line, “It is the heart that makes a place livable,” is said to have been composed by Nomura Botoni, who was nursing him.
Takasugi wrote that whether one lives amusingly in a world that is, by nature, not amusing depends on one’s state of mind, while Nomura Botoni answered that whether the world feels unamusing or not also depends on one’s own feelings.
It’s a verse through which you can enjoy the differing values of Shinsaku Takasugi and Nomura Botoni.
I want to build a country where we can say, “Don’t worry, no matter what happens.”Taro Yamamoto

This expresses, in words that convey a sense of urgency, the conviction behind my work as a politician: the kind of country we are striving to build.
From the claim that we aim for a society where even those in difficult circumstances are saved, it also conveys that, at present, the vulnerable are not being rescued.
It appeals to the belief that politics is originally meant to save such people—and to our determination to restore politics to that true form.
First, we must save those who are suffering; from there, we will build a better country.
That is the message these words seek to deliver.
I want to create a society where simply being alive has value.Taro Yamamoto

These words lament the current reality of how a person’s worth is determined, while expressing a desire to create a world where many people can live with confidence.
They call out the painful structure in which value is decided by productivity and appeal to the idea that being able to live without worrying about such things leads to greater happiness for many.
They assert that, to make it so that simply being alive is valuable, it is crucial for the country and politics to change, expressing a conviction to support citizens in that way.
They reject measuring humans by numbers and carry a powerful conviction that every person is precious.
Please stay alive. I want to put an end to a world that makes you want to die.Taro Yamamoto

These words express a strong desire to somehow change a world that robs people of their confidence and makes them feel like giving up on life.
They convey the idea that the suffering people endure is largely caused by the structure of society and the politics that shape it, and that by changing politics, society itself can be transformed into a world where everyone can live more easily.
A key point is the powerful appeal to those who have given up to choose life, which clearly conveys a sense of solidarity and support.
These words are filled with a wish to reduce suffering and create a world where everyone can feel happiness.
Your life is worth far more than gold could ever be.Bob Marley

As a pioneer of reggae who brought Jamaican music to the world, singer-songwriter Bob Marley left us many words of wisdom.
From his famous quote, “Your life has a value beyond compare—far greater than gold,” we can feel the depth of his love.
The message that life outweighs anything of value conveys a gentle affirmation of one’s existence and the importance of cherishing oneself.
It’s a quote we’d like to gift to those who feel they have no worth.
Strive not for success, but to become a person of value.Albert Einstein

For most people who want to accomplish something, the goal is likely to be success.
However, Albert Einstein, regarded as the greatest physicist of the 20th century, stated in this famous quote that we should strive to become a person of value rather than to be successful.
Success generally refers to gaining wealth or fame, but becoming too fixated on it can at times lead to unnecessary conflicts and friction with others.
When that happens, we distance ourselves from happiness.
To avoid this, perhaps he is teaching us that our talents should be used not only for ourselves but to truly help others, and that we should find value in that.
