Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.Martin Luther

The famous quote, “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree today,” is attributed to the German philosopher Martin Luther.

As a writer and theologian, he left behind numerous notable sayings and works.

Urging people to hold on to hope even in the face of parting, Luther was also a key figure who helped change the course of European history.

The hottest love has the coldest end.Socrates

Socrates left behind the saying, “It is passionate love that meets a cold end.” Indeed, it’s often the romances that burn the brightest that end with the two people hating each other.

Even so, the fact that a sad ending occurred means they loved each other that deeply.

The past can’t hurt you anymore, not unless you let it.Alan Moore

Alan Moore left the words, “The past can’t hurt you anymore, not unless you let it.” Indeed, getting hurt by a breakup is really because we ourselves keep dragging it out.

There’s no point in being bound to something that has already passed.

The saddest thing about love is that not only that it cannot last forever, but that heartbreak is soon forgotten.William Faulkner

William Faulkner once said, “The saddest thing about love is not that it cannot last forever, but that heartbreak is soon forgotten.” The wounds of a broken heart fade faster than we expect.

No matter how deeply two people loved each other, it’s sad to think it can be forgotten.

This is a good sign, having a broken heart. It means we have tried for something.Elizabeth Gilbert

“A wounded heart is a good sign.

It means you tried.” This quote by Elizabeth Gilbert means that if your heart is hurt, it shows how serious you were about it.

If you were able to have such an experience, then even if it ends, it is nothing less than a wonderful asset.

A Perfect Circle – So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish (Official Video)
So long, and thanks for all the fish! — Douglas Adams

Douglas Adams was a novelist known for the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series and a versatile British writer who also worked on screenplays for Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Doctor Who, as well as on computer games.

Here, I’d like to introduce the title of the fourth book in Adams’s signature Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series: “So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.” While it’s a book title rather than a famous quote, the phrase—literally “thank you for all the fish”—is oddly intriguing, isn’t it? I’ve heard that overseas it’s sometimes used as a lighthearted sign-off in emails when leaving a company.

As shown in the video accompanying this piece, it’s also been quoted as a song title, so it must be quite well known in the English-speaking world.

Never say good bye, because saying goodby means going away and going away means forgetting.Peter Pan

John M. Barrie – Never Say Goodbye Because Goodbye Means Going Away And Going Away Means Forgetting
Never say goodbye, because saying goodbye means going away, and going away means forgetting. — Peter Pan

Peter Pan, the eternal child—the boy who never grows up.

Created by Scottish author James Matthew Barrie, he’s the protagonist of a fairy tale and, thanks in part to Disney’s animated adaptation, one of the most beloved and famous characters worldwide.

There are many memorable quotes in the story of Peter Pan, and today I’d like to introduce this line: “Never say good bye, because saying goodby means going away and going away means forgetting.” The nuance is something like: don’t say goodbye—goodbye means leaving, and leaving means forgetting.

Coming from Peter Pan, the eternal child, it feels profoundly moving, doesn’t it?
