Seasons Of LoveJonathan Larson

An insert song from the Broadway musical Rent, it’s also frequently sung as a gospel piece.
A year equals 525,600 minutes, and the song asks how we choose to live each and every one of those minutes—suggesting we measure that time in seasons of love.
With a quiet yet powerful melody, its lyrics truly resonate.
Total PraiseRichard Smallwood

This is a song by Richard Smallwood, a towering figure in the gospel world who displayed his talent from a young age and has won numerous awards.
The lyrics are partially drawn from the Bible, and the song is a prayer to God when one encounters hardships on a pilgrimage.
It is, above all, grand in scale and beautifully melodic.
Hail Holy Queentraditional

It’s one of the most iconic songs from the film “Sister Act,” which helped popularize the gospel genre in Japan.
It starts with a hymn-like intro and then suddenly shifts into a full-on gospel arrangement.
The lively groove and clapping naturally get listeners moving.
THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINESteeles

It’s sung in the Whoopi Goldberg movie “Corrina, Corrina.” The title translates to “This Little Light of Mine,” and it’s a bright, uplifting song about letting your own light shine no matter what.
Both the melody and the lyrics repeat many times, so it’s easy to remember.
OH HAPPY DAYEdwin Hawkins

This song became famous in the movie Sister Act 2, but it was originally a huge hit performed by the Edwin Hawkins Singers.
It’s also featured in the musical Mama, I Want to Sing.
The quiet introduction building to a powerful climax is quintessentially gospel.
Joy To The WorldWhitney Houston

The original song is the well-known Christmas hymn in Japanese, ‘Joy to the World’ (Morobito Kozorite).
It begins with a solemn, gentle solo, but once that ends, it suddenly shifts into an up-tempo gospel.
It’s a song from Whitney’s starring film, ‘The Preacher’s Wife.’
Hymn No. 109: Silent Nightfranz Xaver Gruber

A Christmas carol beloved around the world.
The music was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, with the original lyrics by Joseph Mohr.
The well-known anecdote tells that in 1818, because the church organ had broken, the piece was born as a song with guitar accompaniment.
Its melody, like a lullaby, gently conveys the tranquility of the holy, hushed night and the tender devotion of watching over the Christ child.
Translated into more than 300 languages, the story of soldiers singing it to one another during World War I has been passed down as a symbol of peace.
Combining solemnity with warmth, this song is perfect for quietly listening on a winter’s night when you want to spend a calm, peaceful moment.
