In recent years, Halloween has become one of the most exciting events of the year in Japan as well!

Many of you have probably gone out in costume or attended a Halloween party at least once, right?

And nothing boosts the Halloween mood like music!

There are plenty of Japanese songs with a Halloween theme, but many people still prefer to choose from Western music.

So in this article, we’ll introduce lots of English-language songs that are perfect for Halloween!

We’ve gathered a wide range—from songs that are directly about Halloween and movie theme songs to tracks about ghosts and tunes with a spooky atmosphere—so be sure to find your favorite one.

ZombieThe Cranberries

ZombieThe Cranberries

They’re from Ireland, and this is one of the signature songs by the popular 1990s rock band The Cranberries! While the lyrics make it an anti-war song, given that the title is “Zombie,” it could also work as a Halloween track.

Bad HabitsEd Sheeran

Ed Sheeran, the UK-born artist who’s hugely popular in Japan as well.

His 2019 release “Shape of You” still shows up frequently in Japanese media.

Among his works, the perfect Halloween party song is “Bad Habits.” As you can tell from the music video, it’s a vampire-themed piece with an overall eerie vibe.

The melody is crafted with a structure reminiscent of 1980s synth-pop, so many listeners may find it pleasantly nostalgic.

DraculaBea Miller

Bea Miller – Dracula (Official Lyric Video)

Dracula, the most famous vampire in the world.

Vampires have been used as motifs in films, music, and novels across eras and cultures, and Dracula stands as their iconic figure.

The song I’m introducing today is, fittingly, titled “Dracula,” performed by Bea Miller, known as an artist from season 2 of the popular audition show The X Factor.

Born in 1999, she’s a rising young singer, and this track appears on her 2015 album Not an Apology.

Miller herself took part in composing the song, which conveys the idea that, for someone as individualistic as the narrator, a dangerous lover is appealing—likened to Dracula.

Why not check it out as a slightly offbeat Halloween song?

Monster MashBobby Boris Pickett

It’s a song released in 1962 by American pop singer-songwriter Bobby “Boris” Pickett.

The lyrics are about zombies and Frankenstein having a party in a graveyard, making it a track that perfectly represents a Halloween party!

GhostBombay Bicycle Club

A track from the debut album by the UK guitar rock band Bombay Bicycle Club, and apparently the band members were still in their teens at the time! Although the song is themed around ghosts, its breathtakingly beautiful atmosphere is overwhelming.

SpiderheadCage The Elephant

A perfect track for a Halloween party, blending an eerie atmosphere with a rock sound.

The lyrics are striking, using the “spider” nesting in one’s head as a metaphor to depict confronting inner conflict and fear.

Released in October 2013, this song is included on the album Melophobia, and is characterized by energetic performances and a catchy melody.

Its background, said to be born from a battle with addiction, adds further depth to the track.

Highly recommended for those who enjoy a dark, mysterious vibe or are looking for rock-flavored Halloween BGM.

Be sure to check out this song packed with the appeal of Cage The Elephant.

The Curse of MillhavenNick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, led by the Australian maverick Nick Cave, are a uniquely individual band with a cult following.

Their decadent, solitary aesthetic, grounded in literary erudition, creates a world perfectly suited to inspiring fervent fans across the globe.

Among their discography, their ninth album—which also achieved commercial success—The Curse of Millhaven features songs that all deal with themes suggested by its title, and the album itself might make a fitting Halloween soundtrack.

This time, I’ll introduce a track from the album, also titled The Curse of Millhaven, which centers on a lonely young girl as its protagonist.

Set to a traditional British ballad style, the lyrics unfold a story that is tragic yet tinged with a certain dark humor—be sure to read along, perhaps using a translation tool as needed!
