Many of the ideas use construction paper and recycled materials, making them great summer craft projects for kids, too!

lantern wind chime

Perfect for summer festivals! Let me introduce lantern-style wind chimes.

Many people probably want to decorate with lanterns for summer festival decorations, right? So this time, let’s make a lantern-shaped wind chime.

You’ll need craft bands, glue, clothespins, washi paper, a spray bottle, paste, and so on.

If you make it with children, it can be a great opportunity for them to learn the steps leading up to the finished lantern.

By adding a small bell, you can also enjoy a refreshing sound!

[100-Yen DIY ☆ Tanabata] How to Make a Paper Lantern
[Origami] 3D Lantern

If it’s a lantern, you really want to light it up, right? For those people, we recommend this three-dimensional lantern made from origami.

Instead of a real flame, you’ll use an LED light, but the glow shining through a single sheet of paper has a uniquely special charm.

Compared to other lanterns, the steps are a bit fewer, so it seems doable with young children.

Use double-sided colored paper rather than regular origami paper; thin chiyogami also works nicely.

If you have time, making the center tube out of cellophane adds a more fantastical feel.

Imagine those long, slender lanterns you see in Tanabata festival decorations.

[Felt] Disney Lantern

[Cut and Paste Only] Disney-Style Lantern Made of Felt / 100-Yen Store DIY / Summer Festival / Felt Lantern
[Felt] Disney Lantern

Disney characters are beloved by kids and adults alike.

Let’s make felt lanterns inspired by Disney characters.

Use colors that represent them—red and black for Mickey Mouse, white and light blue for Donald Duck, and so on—to express Disney characters through lanterns.

Of course, you can also use colors that remind you of your favorite anime or story characters.

It sounds fun to create all kinds of pieces.

Cut felt into circles, then cut the circles in half and fold each half in two.

When you fold a half, glue it to hold the shape.

Combine two parts of different colors and fix them so they form a half-circle.

Then glue the half-circle parts together to make a round, lantern-like shape.

Add decorations and a handle to finish.

Using felt gives the piece a gentle, cozy feel.

Here’s an idea for making a “Lantern Ghost” using paper cups.

The ghost’s body is made by connecting two paper cups rim-to-rim.

To make it look like the mouth is open, slightly offset the cups when you glue the rims together.

Cut out eyes and a tongue from construction paper and stick them onto the cups.

To make it clear that it’s a lantern, wrap a strip of black construction paper around the cup just above the bottom and glue it in place.

Poke a hole in the bottom of the cup where you attached the eyes, thread a string through for hanging, and you’re done.

Place a small light inside when using it.

Square character lantern

Let’s make a “square character lantern” using a milk carton.

Cut off the spout section of the milk carton, make slits at the four corners, then fold them inward to create a lid.

Cover the whole carton with construction paper.

Cut a toilet paper roll into 3 cm sections, wrap them with red construction paper, and attach one to the top and one to the bottom of the carton.

Create any facial parts you like from construction paper and stick them onto the carton to form the character’s face.

Then, punch holes in the toilet paper roll pieces, thread a string through for hanging, and you’re done.

If you don’t have a milk carton, you can make it using just construction paper.

Colorful paper cup lanterns

Why not brighten up your summer with cute, colorful lanterns? They’re easy to make with just a paper cup, construction paper, and twine.

First, draw your favorite designs—like fireworks—on the paper cup.

Next, cut a strip of red construction paper into a 20 cm-long rectangle.

Cut a strip of orange construction paper to the same length, but make it one-third the width of the red strip.

Glue the orange strip down the center of the red strip for decoration, then attach the two ends of the decorated strip to the rim and the bottom of the cup so that the middle of the strip bulges outward.

Wrap a thin strip of black construction paper around the edge of the cup’s bottom and glue it in place.

Finally, attach twine to the bottom as a handle, and you’re done.

Feel free to use any colors you like for the decorative paper!

[Donburi] Goldfish Lantern

I made a goldfish for the Goldfish Lantern Festival. I used a 100-yen shop bowl. Cute. Summer. A folk craft from Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. ❤︎ Goldfish / Disposable container / Craft ❤︎ #772
[Donburi] Goldfish Lantern

Have you heard of the goldfish lanterns, a folk craft from Yanai City in Yamaguchi Prefecture? These goldfish-shaped lanterns are so charming they look like they could be Pokémon characters.

There’s even a large-scale Goldfish Lantern Festival where they take center stage.

Videos of the festival are uploaded to video sites, so check them out if you have time! You can actually make these goldfish lanterns using empty styrofoam noodle bowls.

There are many steps involved, so it might be best for those confident in their fine motor skills, but a bunch of goldfish lanterns hanging together is truly a spectacular sight.

It would be a lot of fun to make them with friends, too!

What do you think is the star of a festival? Goldfish scooping? Cotton candy? Shooting games? Of course, when you think of the main attractions, those kinds of stalls come to mind, but what really brings the festival to life are the lanterns that glow softly in the dark.

Let’s make large lanterns out of construction paper to brighten up the festival! Use your favorite color plus black for the base.

Since you won’t be using metal fittings or plastic sheets, even small children can make them.

Instead of crafting while watching a how-to video, watch it once all the way through to learn the steps, then start—things will go more smoothly.

The key to a clean finish is cutting the paper evenly.

Liven up the festival with colorful lanterns!

Here’s a refreshing lantern idea.

This design evokes the sea, making it look like fish are swimming inside the lantern.

First, use origami to make fish and seaweed pieces.

Next, stick masking tape to the top and bottom edges of the laminating film that will form the lantern body, and attach the seaweed to the lower inside area.

Roll the laminating film into a tube and secure it, then punch holes on the left and right sides of the top.

Thread string through the fish you made and place them inside the tube, then tie the handle string to the fish string.

Pass the handle string through the holes you made, tie it to your preferred length, and you’re done.

[Construction Paper] Perfect for wall decorations! 3D Lanterns

Here’s how to make an easy “lantern” out of construction paper.

It’s a three-dimensional piece that looks dynamic when displayed on a wall, so it’s highly recommended.

Take two sheets each of white and your preferred color of construction paper, and cut them into lantern shapes.

Fold them in half, then apply double-sided tape along the fold line.

Reserve one piece without tape to use as the base.

The key tip is to crease the edge where you applied the tape so it bends easily.

Attach the pieces alternately in white and your chosen color, and finish by adding black rectangles at the top and bottom.

Done!
