Hidden gems of yami songs. Recommended popular tracks.

I put together a playlist of dark/“yami” songs from Japanese music.

They’re feelings you can’t tell anyone, but everyone has some abnormal emotions.

A lot of the lyrics are scary, but if you listen, I think many people will find them relatable.

It’s a collection of masterpieces that turn messy, irreconcilable emotions—things that can’t be wrapped up with pretty words—into song.

Hidden gems of “yami” (dark) songs: Recommended popular tracks (21–30)

Wedge -Kusabi-Oku Hanako

After being released in advance exclusively on the iTunes Store, this 15th single was released a month later by Pony Canyon.

Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of their major-label debut, the track is treated as a “10th Anniversary Commemorative Single,” and the coupling includes songs that were singles from their indie era.

CountdownCocco

Cocco – Countdown [Video Clip Short]
CountdownCocco

It’s a scary song about a woman who was cheated on, baring murderous intent toward her lover while insisting that if he apologizes, there’s still a chance to get back together.

The lyrics seem to have shocked many listeners, making it a very impactful track.

Some people might have had similar thoughts themselves at some point.

This life is for you.the GazettE

If you like visual kei bands, I think many people will think of this song when they hear “yandere song.” It’s about a man stalking the woman next door, and it captures a very realistic kind of fear.

The gap between the uptempo, cool melody and the subject matter is astonishing.

ButterflyAmano Tsukiko

ButterflyAmano Tsukiko

The theme song of the horror game Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly.

It begins with an eerie, ominous atmosphere right from the intro, but it’s the kind of song you’ll get hooked on once you listen to it.

The track is tied to the game’s story, so knowing the game’s content makes it even more enjoyable.

The happiest way to die in the worldkoka

The Happiest Way to Die in the World / Reminiscence Song feat. IA
The happiest way to die in the worldkoka

This song portrays the thoughts that flash through your mind when you’re at rock bottom—complex ideas that can even seem contradictory.

The negative emotions of leaving or disappearing overlap with a warm, piano-centered sound, conveying a sense of emotional instability.

Although it sings about the ideal of vanishing when there’s no one left to grieve, the overall expression of pain also feels like someone desperately trying to talk themselves through it.

It’s a song that resonates deeply with the ways we all, at our lowest, contemplate disappearing from where we are.

My Room, My Dress Shirt, and MeHiramatsu Eri

Singer-songwriter Eri Hiramatsu hails from Suma Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture.

“Heya to Y-shirt to Watashi,” released as her 8th single, is her biggest hit and won the Lyrics Award at the 34th Japan Record Awards.

A film based on the concept of this song has also been produced.

poofKing Gnu

This song was written as the theme for the film “Stolen Identity 2,” starring Yudai Chiba.

It’s included on King Gnu’s acclaimed 2020 album “CEREMONY,” and it brilliantly captures the film’s psycho-suspense tension through its sound.

The lyrics, which seem to depict the fear lurking in the anonymity of the digital age and the frantic feeling of being unable to escape an unidentified presence, intertwine with a thrilling digital beat to create an addictive quality that sticks in your head after just one listen.

The fierce interplay of the dual vocals and the meticulously crafted production weave a dark worldview that is truly overwhelming.

Immerse yourself in the work’s distinctive atmosphere, and your everyday life might start to look a little different.
