[2026] The Wonderful Irish: Popular Bands from Ireland (21–30)
Love Will Set You FreeKodaline

Kodaline are a four-piece band from Ireland that follows in the lineage of heavyweights like their illustrious Irish seniors U2 and COLDPLAY, the pinnacle of lyrical UK rock since the 2000s.
Hugely popular in their home country, they are a rock band beloved in Japan as well, thanks to their grand soundscapes that draw arena crowds into sing-along swells, their overwhelming melodic beauty, and superb choral work—all while maintaining an unpretentious presence.
Their debut album, In a Perfect World, released in 2013, topped the charts in Ireland and debuted at No.
3 in the UK, marking major success right out of the gate.
The four albums they released through 2020 all boast a high level of craftsmanship, and anyone with a weakness for lyrical UK rock woven from beautiful melodies and vocals is sure to fall in love with them.
The harmony between their expansive scale and a delicate yet powerful band ensemble creates a flavor distinct from American stadium rock, and their melodies—resonating deeply with Japanese sensibilities—can move listeners to tears.
New YorkSnow Patrol

If you’re an avid listener of UK rock, you might think Snow Patrol are a Glasgow band.
In reality, they’re a mixed lineup of members from Northern Ireland and Scotland.
In any case, Snow Patrol—who achieved major success in the 2000s—are now a five-piece indie rock band formed in 1994.
They released their debut album in 1998 and their second in 2001 on an indie label, but neither met with significant success.
That said, I personally remember they were quietly talked about among Japanese UK-rock fans who frequently haunted record shops.
In 2003, their third album and masterpiece, Final Straw, became the turning point that propelled them into the spotlight.
It’s a treasure trove of gorgeous melodies, and many people first discovered them through this record.
In 2006, they reached even greater heights with their fourth album, Eyes Open, and the track Chasing Cars became a huge hit in the United States.
If you’re new to their music, the two albums mentioned above are highly recommended, but be sure to check out their first two indie-era records as well—their unadorned, homespun feel is quintessentially indie.
Big SurThe Thrills

The Thrills are an Irish rock band formed in 2001.
They released two albums between 2003 and 2004, and after their 2007 album, the band disbanded in 2008.
This song was released as a single in 2003 and reached No.
17 on the UK charts.
Go Dig My GraveLankum

Lankum are a four-piece folk band from Dublin, Ireland, who originally performed as a sibling duo under the name Lynched.
Formed in 2000, they changed to their current name in 2016 as noted above.
Their distinctive, dark, and weighty sound is rooted in traditional Irish folk while incorporating elements of punk and drone.
They drew widespread attention with their 2019 album The Livelong Day, winning Ireland’s RTÉ Choice Music Prize for Album of the Year.
Their March 2023 release, False Lankum, earned high praise and a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize in the UK.
Blending tradition with innovation, their music suggests new possibilities for Irish folk.
Observatory DestroyerThe Jimmy Cake

The Jimmy Cake is a nine-member music group that originally performed under the name Das Madman, beginning in the late 1990s in Dublin.
This track is included on their fourth album, Master, released in 2015.
