Japanese bands recommended for junior high school students

I think many people first pick up an instrument in middle school.

I’d like to introduce some bands that could inspire you to start your own band.

They’re all super cool and passionate—absolute must-listens for middle schoolers!

Now here’s “Yoshu Fukushu” by Maximum the Hormone, a massively popular mixture rock band that virtually everyone knows today.

It’s a song I hope helps spread the idea that music isn’t just about words—there are songs in this world whose essence can’t be conveyed by words alone.

This is “Rewrite” by the hugely popular four-piece rock band ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION.

It’s a song I especially want middle schoolers—who often grapple with dissatisfaction toward society and complex emotions—to experience: a full-throttle melody that feels like a cry from the heart, crafted by the genius Masafumi Gotoh, capturing the rush of youth.

Blue Encount’s songs, which might feel like the presence of an older brother, are always like cheer-up anthems that give you a push forward.

Their tracks—great for middle schoolers who want to create music that stays close to the heart—are solid, gentle, and sure to move the listener.

This is also a band I recommend to people who love unique bands that create their own distinctive world.

To stand out from others, individuality is the most important thing, I believe.

Even if it isn’t immediately accepted by others, if you fully express your individuality, you’ll eventually be able to move listeners’ hearts.

Windy DayELLEGARDEN

It’s “Kaze no Hi” by the four-piece rock band ELLEGARDEN, who have become legendary—already ten years since they went on hiatus.

Life has tough days and fun days, but this is a cheering song filled with the message: let’s live joyfully and keep moving forward.

It’s a track I especially want middle schoolers—who weren’t around during the band’s active years—to listen to.

Here comes KANA-BOON, known for their upbeat tracks.

Their music has a wonderful handmade feel—simple, honest, and charming in a way that puts you at ease.

I hope the middle schoolers can fully bring out their own unpretentious appeal and grow into a really cool band.

Take me underMAN WITH A MISSION

When it comes to wolf-themed bands, it’s them.

Every time I watch them on TV, I get drawn into their world.

A hard, no-nonsense band.

Their orthodox songs are cool precisely because they stick to their guns without wavering.

Practice every day.

Work hard, put in the effort, and let’s play with style.
