[Childcare] Shaved Ice Craft Ideas by Age and Materials

As it starts getting hotter, you can’t help but think about summery craft ideas.

Many teachers may be struggling because craft ideas can easily become repetitive.

Shaved ice is a familiar motif for children and has a refreshing feel, making it perfect for summer crafts.

This time, we’ve gathered shaved ice craft ideas by material and age group!

With a bit of ingenuity, you can create shaved ice with all kinds of vibes, and the kids will love it.

If you use them for pretend play, they might even open a shaved ice stand.

Enjoy the summer through shaved ice crafts!

[Coffee Filters] Shaved Ice Craft for the 3-Year-Old Class

[Preschool Craft] Shaved Ice Craft! An Easy Method Using Coffee Filters
[Coffee Filters] Shaved Ice Craft for the 3-Year-Old Class

A great craft activity for a class of three-year-olds is making shaved ice using coffee filters.

Have the children draw patterns on white coffee filters with their favorite colors of water-based markers.

It’s fine to combine several colors.

Once the patterns are done, use a spray bottle to dampen the filters and let the colors bleed.

After the filters dry, place some cotton inside and seal them with double-sided tape.

Finally, attach them to a paper shaved-ice cup made from construction paper using double-sided tape, and you’re done! Since double-sided tape is used differently from regular tape, please make sure the teacher provides assistance when using it.

Let’s make shaved ice art that takes advantage of the soft, pale tones you get with a tampo (sponge dauber) technique! Teachers, please prepare in advance by cutting out the shaved ice shapes, bowls, and fruit toppings from construction paper.

Give the children the shaved ice cutouts and have them add color using the tampo.

Dip the tampo in water-diluted paint and dab color on as if stamping.

When they’re done, combine the ice with the bowl and add their favorite topping pieces.

Adjust the steps according to age—such as having children cut out the parts themselves or do the gluing—so the activity suits their developmental level.

[Intro fingerplay] Crunch-Crunch Shaved Ice

A classic song for nursery school: “Gari Gari Shaved Ice” [Summer song, nursery music play, hand-play song, all-purpose activity]
[Intro fingerplay] Crunch-Crunch Shaved Ice

To set the mood for making shaved ice, let’s have fun with a hand-play song! This hand-play song, “Gari-Gari Kakigori,” is about how your tongue turns different colors when you eat shaved ice made from shaved ice blocks.

When the song mentions shaving the ice, rotate your hands as if turning the lever on a shaved ice machine; when it mentions your tongue changing color, stick your tongue out to show it.

Try matching your movements to the lyrics.

Lots of colors and flavors of shaved ice appear, so when it’s time for the craft activity, it will spark the children’s imaginations about what color of shaved ice they want to make.

[Origami] Making cute shaved ice

Origami “Shaved Ice” [Easy Folding Method] [Preschool Craft] [Ages 3 and up]
[Origami] Making cute shaved ice

Introducing a cute shaved ice made with origami! You can fold it from a single sheet of paper with simple steps, so kids can enjoy working on origami too.

Using patterned paper, like polka dots, makes both the shaved ice and the cup look adorable—highly recommended.

After folding, you can add fruit stickers to make it look like toppings.

You can also make a spoon from gold, silver, or gray origami and pair it with the shaved ice.

It’s great for wall decorations as well, so give it a try!

[PE Tape] Transparent Shaved Ice

Let’s try making translucent shaved ice using PE tape.

Beforehand, the teacher should cut construction paper into the shapes of shaved ice and a bowl, and glue the pieces together.

Also, please cut the PE tape into small strips in advance.

Apply glue or double-sided tape to the shaved ice area, and have the children stick PE tape in the colors they like on top.

Since PE tape is transparent and gives a cool, refreshing feel, it’s the perfect material for making shaved ice.

Create shaved ice that lets you feel cool not only by eating it, but also by the way it looks.

[Sticker Activity] Shaved Ice Craft for the 1-Year-Old Class

Shaved Ice Craft for 1-Year-Olds: A Construction Activity Using Construction Paper for Childcare Workers
[Sticker Activity] Shaved Ice Craft for the 1-Year-Old Class

For a class of one-year-olds, we recommend an easy shaved ice craft using stickers.

Please have the teachers handle the steps of cutting construction paper into the shapes of shaved ice, a bowl, and a spoon, and assembling them.

The children can then decorate the shaved ice by sticking on stickers to make the syrup and toppings.

Use round stickers or fruit-themed stickers as toppings to complete the shaved ice.

Try using the finished pieces as wall decorations.

[Tissue Paper and Stickers] Shaved Ice Art for Ages 4 and Up

This is a shaved ice craft where tissue paper stands in for syrup.

Cut the bowl and ice shapes from construction paper, then tear your favorite colors of tissue paper into small pieces and glue them onto the ice.

One color is fine, but using several colors makes the shaved ice look more festive.

Once the ice part is done, finish the bowl: decorate it with drawings or stickers.

This project is suitable from around age four.

Since scissors are used, be sure to work together with an adult.
