Kanae Kocho’s famous quotes: words that teach us kindness and strength (1–10)
I want her to find the happiness of an ordinary girl and live until she becomes an old woman.Kanae Kocho
These are the words Kanae spoke to her younger sister Shinobu as she lay dying after losing the battle against Doma.
Their parents had been killed by demons, and the two sisters had promised to slay as many demons as they could together.
But realizing she was at the end, Kanae told Shinobu to leave the Demon Slayer Corps and live a happy life.
She acknowledged Shinobu’s efforts, yet having faced an Upper Rank demon herself, she fully understood their overwhelming strength.
Rather than have Shinobu lose her life for the sake of vengeance, Kanae wanted her to live on and find happiness.
As long as there’s a spark, a person’s heart will blossom—so it will be okay.Kanae Kocho

Kanao Tsuyuri, whom the Kocho sisters doted on like a little sister, was a child who, because of her circumstances, wouldn’t even eat unless told to.
While Shinobu reprimanded Kanao, saying, “A child who can’t think and act for herself is no good—it’s dangerous,” Kanae spoke these words and handed Kanao a copper coin so she could make choices when she couldn’t decide on her own.
Isn’t it a wonderful quote that lets us feel her broad, compassionate heart? Kanae’s words would later come true in reality.
We will not let others go through what we did.Kanae Kocho
Kanae Kocho, whose parents were killed by demons, said she didn’t want others to suffer the same sorrow they did, and promised with her younger sister Shinobu that the two of them would defeat demons together.
Even though her grief over losing her parents had not yet healed, she spoke these words through tears, and I believe she was still in her teens.
And yet she could imagine the sorrow of others and chose to join the Demon Slayer Corps—she must have been born with a strong and gentle heart.
She later became a top-ranked swordswoman in the Corps and was bestowed the title of Flower Hashira.
I want to save them—the humans. And the demons, too.Kanae Kocho
The Kochō sisters’ parents were killed by demons, and they themselves were in danger too, but their lives were saved by Gyōmei Himejima.
This isn’t explored much in the main story, but in the novel “One-Winged Butterfly,” there’s a scene where the sisters later visit Himejima to ask him to teach them about demon slaying.
This line is something Kanae says during her conversation with Himejima.
She saw demons as sad beings and wanted to save them just like humans.
Perhaps out of respect for her sister’s feelings, even Shinobu Kochō—despite her deep hatred for demons—spoke about her dream of getting along with them.
It doesn’t matter—stand up. Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho.Kanae Kocho
These are the words addressed to the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho, after she suffered a grievous wound from Doma’s attack.
Shinobu’s injury was deep enough that an ordinary person would have died, but Kanae did not allow her to complain—if you’re a Hashira, stand.
She pushed her away with those harsh words.
Even as she demanded that Shinobu continue fighting to the end as a fellow Hashira, after this scene she also conveyed, as her elder sister, her faith in Shinobu.
Doma was the demon Shinobu had sworn to defeat as Kanae’s killer.
Spurred by Kanae’s words, Shinobu rose to her feet and threw herself back into the battle to bring Doma down.
Let’s defeat the demons. As many as we can. Together, the two of us.Kanae Kocho
While I can’t even imagine the shock and grief of having one’s parents killed by a demon right before one’s eyes, Kanae Kocho didn’t merely lament her fate; she resolved, together with her younger sister Shinobu, to defeat demons.
It is only natural to harbor hatred after having her parents’ lives stolen, but within Kanae there was also a desire to prevent others from experiencing the same sorrow she had.
Even with what happened to her parents, when she learned that demons were once human, she called them “sad creatures,” revealing a gentle heart that felt compassion for them.
Pull yourself together. I won’t allow you to cry.Kanae Kocho
Despite her gentle appearance and calm demeanor, this line conveys the strength of Kanae Kocho, who rose to the highest rank in the Demon Slayer Corps—the Hashira.
She said it to Shinobu Kocho after Shinobu had suffered a fatal wound in her battle with Doma.
At first glance, the words may seem a bit harsh to direct at her injured younger sister, but she spoke them precisely because she acknowledged Shinobu’s abilities as a fellow Hashira and believed in her strength.
As a result, Shinobu regained her resolve and fulfilled her mission.
