K-pop captivates us with its powerful dance and outstanding vocal prowess.
At the same time, I feel that K-pop uniquely shines through songs with dark concepts or a melancholic atmosphere.
There’s also a subtle elegance that invites multiple, indirect interpretations.
So I’ve decided to spotlight some Korean “yami” songs—tracks that dwell in darker emotions.
When you’re going through sadness, hardship, or a streak of bad days, it’s natural to feel low.
There’s something called the “matching effect,” which suggests that listening to music with a similar mood can cleanse the heart.
Sometimes, it might be nice to relax and spend time with masterpieces that fit your blue feelings.

[K-POP] Korean “yami” songs that fit a blue mood (1–10)
숨이 차 (Getting Closer)SEVENTEEN

SEVENTEEN has many songs with a happy mood, but this one has a dark concept.
It’s a maddening love song that conveys a raw, straightforward darkness—like “I want you so badly it takes my breath away.” Breath is an important motif, and the choreography captures that rough breathing and the pain of love, resulting in a cool, polished finish.
JealousyMONSTAX

This “Jealousy” is a hit song released in March 2018 by MONSTA X, a popular Korean boy group.
While it carries an ’80s-inspired vibe, it blends elements like trap and future pop, resulting in a level of quality that still holds up perfectly well in the 2020s.
As the title suggests, the lyrics candidly depict a man’s jealousy, which many listeners might find both bitterly relatable and empathetic.
What’s especially interesting about “Jealousy” is that it actually mentions the name of a certain member in the lyrics; despite dealing with a downbeat theme, the way they slip in that playful touch shows real finesse!
FEVERENHYPEN

The song “FEVER,” included on the 2021 second mini-album BORDER : CARNIVAL, boasts popularity rivaling the title track.
Its world-building likens the theme to vampires.
With a languid melody and a vocal delivery that heightens a sensual mood, ENHYPEN’s sexy charm seeps through.
Overflowing with the desire to be understood and the yearning that can’t be contained, the song can also be felt as overlapping with a love for someone of a different status or someone out of reach.
The incorporated breaths add atmosphere, and lyrics about wanting to suffer evoke a yandere-esque, mentally unstable nuance.
While its familiar, easy-to-listen-to sound is appealing, the contrasting heaviness gradually draws you in—making it a masterpiece.
Dis-ease (병)BTS

A track that gives me a kick when I start to slack off.
It’s so rhythmic that I can’t help but hum along.
One of the amazing things about BTS is how they can sing about a gloomy mood in such a pop way.
The lyrics in the first half really tell you to get your act together, but as it goes on, the vibe turns more positive—so nice.
It’s got that perfect touch that naturally puts you in that kind of mood.
Instead of being negative, it feels affirming, so it’s perfect when you’re feeling blue.
Also great when you need some rebellious spirit or a “just watch me” fire.
It feels connected to BTS’s core, and it’s seriously inspiring.
Put It Straight (싫다고 말해) Nightmare Ver.(G)I-DLE

A track from the 2019 mini album “I made,” it sings about emotional misalignment and feelings toward someone precious who’s drifting away.
As expected of (G)I-DLE, they portray this dark worldview brilliantly.
The chorus bursts with a cry from the heart, and the sound design—full of anger and sorrow—creates a haunting, horror-like atmosphere.
Sujin’s intensely unstable (“menhera”) performance on Queendom is especially incredible, so please check it out.
Recovering from a breakup looks different for everyone and is never easy.
This song hits particularly hard when you feel like you can’t believe in anything.
MorningMAMAMOO

A heartbreak song with the high level of completion only Mamamoo—renowned for their vocals—could achieve: aching, painful, and sorrowful.
There are times when you wish you could see the person you loved so much, even if only in a dream, or you replay memories in your head, and when morning comes, it hurts so much you don’t want to wake up.
It’s painful because you know that once you get up, you’ll face the reality of being alone again.
I think many people can relate to feeling mentally worn down like that.
GashinaSUNMI

This is a solo song by Sunmi, formerly of Wonder Girls.
It became a big hit thanks to its addictive, distinctive melody and the tricky sound of its title, “Gashina.” The slightly unhinged, dangerous vibe comes from a secret hidden in the title.
“Gashina” carries two meanings: the heartbroken lament “Why are you leaving me?” and a play on words suggesting both “thorny me” and “Are you leaving?” Like a beautiful rose with thorns, the song’s thrilling edge is undeniably cool.
