Recommendations for mellow, feel-good songs that transcend the boundary between Japanese and Western music

A collection of mellow tracks.

What kind of songs do you like?

The kind you can enjoy while driving at night, or ones that make the time you spend slowly with someone special feel even more wonderful…

They’re also great as background music to elevate the atmosphere of a setting.

You might associate mellow songs more with Western music, but there are plenty in Japanese music too!

Here, I’ll carefully select and introduce recommendations—both Western and Japanese—of mellow tracks that enhance the mood and make you feel at ease when you listen.

Circus NightNanao Tabito

With a groove close to neo-soul and an ennui-tinged vocal that creates a mellow vibe, this track, “Circus Night,” stands out.

Unlike the current trend of using whisper vocals on every melody line, it’s crafted so that the unique qualities of the whisper voice truly shine on the right parts of the track.

Sunny Day Service is a rock band known to those in the know.

Their track Summer Soldier has a mellow, laid-back vibe.

Amid the nonchalant vocal delivery, there are a few phrases that somehow feel warm.

It’s a wonderful piece that makes you feel your heart being cleansed just by listening.

It’s a song whose atmosphere you could easily get lost in.

Nothing But LoveIzzi Dunn

If you like smooth, flowing R&B, I recommend “Nothing But Love.” Izzy Dunn’s powerful vocals and the track’s impeccable sense of rhythm give it a really great feel.

Since there aren’t many of these classic, rhythm-focused songs in today’s R&B, this is a rare gem.

“circus” blends a jazzy vibe with a mellow atmosphere.

The groove is so good that your body naturally starts swaying as you listen.

It has a strong R&B feel as well.

Both the rhythm and melody lean toward Black music, yet it also carries a touch of modern jazz.

You could call it a highly sophisticated track.

They’re one of the top bands in Japan when it comes to chillwave and dream pop.

Tone Color ~2019 Ver.~KREVA

KREVA has been at the forefront of the hip-hop scene since the early 2000s.

His defining trait is, of course, his rapping skill, but in “Neiro ~2019 Ver.~,” there aren’t many rap verses.

Even so, it’s a rare track that lets you glimpse just how high KREVA’s rap prowess is.

A must-listen for fans of mellow rap.
