A wonderful, moving song

Recommendations for mellow, feel-good songs that transcend the boundary between Japanese and Western music

A collection of mellow tracks.

What kind of songs do you like?

The kind you can enjoy while driving at night, or ones that make the time you spend slowly with someone special feel even more wonderful…

They’re also great as background music to elevate the atmosphere of a setting.

You might associate mellow songs more with Western music, but there are plenty in Japanese music too!

Here, I’ll carefully select and introduce recommendations—both Western and Japanese—of mellow tracks that enhance the mood and make you feel at ease when you listen.

love has come againwynd chymes

Why is the saxophone’s tone so irresistibly sexy? This is a song called “Love Has Come Again” by the Mississippi-born music group Wynd Chymes.

The passionate lead vocals and their tight harmonies give the track a smooth, polished finish.

It’s a song whose atmosphere you could easily get lost in.

Chara, one of the most famous singers in the mellow scene, collaborates with BASI from the veteran hip-hop group Insist on “Sweet Night Fever.” Thanks to BASI’s very smooth flow, the track maintains a mellow tone throughout.

Nothing But LoveIzzi Dunn

If you like smooth, flowing R&B, I recommend “Nothing But Love.” Izzy Dunn’s powerful vocals and the track’s impeccable sense of rhythm give it a really great feel.

Since there aren’t many of these classic, rhythm-focused songs in today’s R&B, this is a rare gem.

“circus” blends a jazzy vibe with a mellow atmosphere.

The groove is so good that your body naturally starts swaying as you listen.

It has a strong R&B feel as well.

Both the rhythm and melody lean toward Black music, yet it also carries a touch of modern jazz.

You could call it a highly sophisticated track.

Night TimeThe fin.

The fin.

is an indie band from Hyogo Prefecture.

They’re one of the top bands in Japan when it comes to chillwave and dream pop.

Their track “Night Time” features a dark, chill sound that’s perfect for the night.

That said, the melody is bright, making it extremely easy to listen to.

Cruisin’ Cruisin’bonobos

If you’re into chill music, I highly recommend “Cruisin’ Cruisin’.” Its standout feature is the unconventional beat, and the way the sounds lock into it is just insanely satisfying to listen to.

It’s also great for training your sense of rhythm, and the lyrics are easy to catch, which is another plus.

Tone Color ~2019 Ver.~KREVA

KREVA has been at the forefront of the hip-hop scene since the early 2000s.

His defining trait is, of course, his rapping skill, but in “Neiro ~2019 Ver.~,” there aren’t many rap verses.

Even so, it’s a rare track that lets you glimpse just how high KREVA’s rap prowess is.

A must-listen for fans of mellow rap.
