[For Seniors] Day-service activities also recommended! Craft ideas for November

November, when autumn deepens and you can feel the chill in the air.

For many older adults, it’s a season when they spend less time outdoors going for walks.

So this time, we’re introducing craft activities with the theme of “11” that can be done indoors.

We’ve prepared projects featuring seasonal foods and flowers that are at their best in November.

They can be enjoyed as decorations on facility walls or taken home as interior decor.

There are also projects that can be used to play games after they’re made.

By all means, try the games together with the older adults.

Some older adults may find it difficult to sense the passage of time or the seasons.

Through November-themed crafts, let’s help them savor the season.

Owl made of felt and pine cones

Let's make pinecone owls together!
Owl made of felt and pine cones

Here’s an idea for making owls using pine cones and felt.

Use a pine cone as the base for the owl.

Cut the owl’s eyes, beak, wings, and facial parts from your choice of felt.

Once you glue the parts onto the base, it’s complete.

Using felt in various colors will make your owl look vibrant.

It’s a fun idea that brings out each maker’s individuality.

Try adding patterns to the wings or designing the eyes to evoke a bird of prey.

Hero Owl

[Fun Craft] I tried making an owl with pine cones
Hero Owl

If you want to make an owl that’s a little different from the usual, how about this hero-inspired idea? Use a pine cone as the base.

Cut the face and wing parts out of felt, but add a twist! Instead of using ordinary brown felt, imagine a hero’s decorations and craft the pieces with armor- and shield-like designs.

Even the cute eyes can take on a cool, raptor-like look by adding just one extra piece.

Finish it as your ideal hero owl.

Pine Cone Owl – Christmas Decoration

Pine Cone Owl - Christmas Decoration

Would you like to make an owl Christmas ornament? Start with a pine cone as the owl’s base and attach eyes, wings, and a beak cut from thin leather or felt.

Then add a red triangular hat made from fabric or a yarn pom-pom to give it a Santa-style look.

Your owl is now complete! Next, glue the owl onto a base made from cardboard and decorate around it with faux greenery, nuts, and other natural accents.

You can leave the cardboard as is, or paint it white and add cotton to create a snowy scene.

Owl decorations with a focus on feathers

Let’s make an owl you can hang on the wall as a decoration.

First, cut out the owl’s base from cardboard.

Take apart a pine cone into individual scales, and start gluing them onto the base along with a tree branch.

Glue the branch to the lower part of the base, and use the pine cone scales on the other areas to create the wings.

Make two round bases for the eyes out of cardboard, then glue jute twine onto them in a spiral.

Attach the black pupils cut from felt.

Glue on the beak, add a string for hanging, and you’re done.

Art box

Art box

Here’s an art box you can enjoy with colorful patterns when placed by a window or in sunlight.

Slice an empty milk carton into rings about 2 centimeters thick and turn them inside out.

Attach tissue paper to one cut edge on one side.

Cut several strips of origami paper, fold or bend them into shapes you like, and glue the tips in place.

Fill the milk carton box with lots of the shaped origami pieces.

Finish by attaching tissue paper to the milk carton’s cut edge.

The fine work of folding origami uses your fingers a lot, so it may also be effective as brain training.

Please place it near a window at the homes of older adults and use it as a decoration.

Doll-style towel hanger

[Easy Craft] [100-Yen DIY] Hand Towel Hanger ☆ #100yen #DAISO #DIY #100yen #handmade #kawaii #recreation #craft #elderly
Doll-style towel hanger

Here’s a project that turns a hand towel into a cute little doll.

If the hand towel you always use at home looked like a doll, it might lift the spirits of older adults, too.

Use a foam ball to make the doll’s face, then attach craft eyes and yarn for hair.

After fixing the facial parts to a wooden clip, decorate it with ribbons and beads.

Attach a towel folded into a triangle to the wooden clip, and your doll-style towel hanger is complete.

You can make one for yourself, and it would also make a delightful gift for families of older adults.

Lampshade made of paper

[100-Yen Shop DIY] Paper Lamp Shade
Lampshade made of paper

Why not try making a lampshade inspired by seasonal flowers? A lampshade is a shade that covers a lamp or bulb, and the materials and designs you use can create many different kinds of light.

This time, let’s make one using shoji paper and washi.

Tear the shoji paper and washi, or fold them into flower shapes and cut them out in advance.

Dilute craft glue with water and brush it onto an inflated balloon.

The key is to apply the glue over an area that matches the size of the shoji paper you’ll attach.

Once you’ve covered the entire surface with shoji paper, add the flower pieces made from washi.

Finally, coat the entire surface with the diluted glue, let it dry, and then pop the balloon.

You’ll have a beautiful spherical lampshade.

It’s also nice to place a dollar-store LED light inside for display.

Seniors are likely to be very pleased with such a lovely creation.
