Chrysanthemum Shadow Decoration Made with Origami

Chrysanthemums, one of the flowers that symbolize autumn, are at their best around November.
From October to November, chrysanthemum exhibitions and festivals are held all over Japan.
Let’s help seniors feel the season with a lovely chrysanthemum wall decoration.
Layer and glue differently sized pieces of origami paper cut into chrysanthemum petal shapes.
The key is to curl the tips of the petals using a bamboo skewer.
This allows you to capture the beautiful feature of chrysanthemums—their many layers of petals.
Attach the chrysanthemum and leaves made from colored paper to a backing sheet, then mount it in a frame made from disposable chopsticks.
It’s a perfect November craft that can be taken home and displayed.
Stained-glass-style wall hanging of maple leaves

Stained glass might seem challenging, but you can create something with a similar look using glass paint you can even find at 100-yen shops! If you’re planning an autumn craft activity, how about a stained-glass-style wall decoration with a maple leaf motif? Draw your outline on a clear plastic sheet with a black glass pen, then use the same type of pen to color in the areas you want.
Arrange the colors however you like! Stained glass generally looks best with combinations of deep, rich colors, so that’s recommended.
Since there’s no actual glass used as the base, it’s a safe project for older adults to enjoy making.
3D persimmon ornament made with origami

There are many ways to enjoy autumn, but what makes me happiest, above all, is the appetite that comes with the season.
When it comes to autumn flavors, persimmons come to mind.
Compared to the persimmons we were familiar with as children, today’s varieties have been improved through selective breeding and have less astringency.
Let’s try making persimmons out of colored paper.
There’s plenty to do—cutting, pasting, pinching, and folding—so it may even help prevent age-related decline in fine motor skills.
If someone has limited dexterity, it’s a good idea to divide up the tasks among everyone.
Using different shades—persimmon, orange, and vermilion—to create a rich variety is the key to making them look attractive.
Gerbera wall decoration

When do you think gerberas are in season? They give the impression of appearing in early summer, but since they’re in the daisy family, they also feel like an autumn flower.
Depending on the variety, gerberas are actually unusual flowers that have two peak seasons.
Would you like to make these lovely gerberas out of colored paper? Compared to other crafts, there are more steps and lots of delicate petals, so it might be better suited to those with steady hands.
It’s best to allow about two hours to be safe.
If there are younger people around, it could be fun to enjoy the craft together!
Pacific saury wrapped in newspaper

Let’s handcraft a seasonal autumn sanma (Pacific saury) using newspaper! All you need is newspaper and tape.
First, roll up a sheet of newspaper into a cylinder about the size of a sweet potato.
Wrap it with a slightly larger sheet of newspaper, twist both ends like a candy wrapper, and secure.
Fold in and tape the end that will be the head.
On the other end, tear small slits by hand and fold them to form the tail.
Finally, tear colored parts of newspaper and paste them on to match the colors of a real sanma.
That’s it! This craft only involves rolling, fastening, and tearing, making it perfect for older adults.
Squirrel and Acorn
In autumn, squirrels enter a busy season as they gather food for the winter.
For this squirrel craft, you’ll color a cut-out squirrel with colored pencils.
Coloring is highly relaxing and a strongly recommended activity.
For the tail, glue leaf-shaped pieces of origami paper to add a three-dimensional effect.
Repeating the same steps helps you feel gradual improvement and builds confidence.
Enjoy making it together while communicating with one another.
Grapes made with tissue paper

Let’s make a big bunch of grapes using soft tissue paper! The steps are simple, so it should be a fun autumn craft activity for a day service.
First, stack sheets of tissue paper that have been cut in half and fold them in an accordion.
Cut the folded stack into two, staple the center, and carefully open it up.
Make several of these tissue paper pieces, then glue them together in the shape of grapes to complete the fruit.
You can also cut branches, tendrils, and leaves from construction paper to decorate—so charming! If you make it with a large group, you can even take on a bigger project like a wall display.
