Classic and Contemporary Hits in Western R&B: From the Newest Popular Tracks to All-Time Big Hits [2026]
The history of R&B—rhythm and blues—goes way back, and the term itself is said to have existed since the 1940s.
That said, the image most people have of R&B as a music genre today was largely established from the 1990s onward, shaped through the lens of club music.
In this article, the first half features a lineup focused on the latest hits and standout tracks by rising artists, while the latter half is packed with classic songs from the 1990s, often called the golden age of R&B.
It offers a broad selection that also looks at subgenres like contemporary R&B, neo-soul, and alternative R&B, so we encourage newcomers to R&B to check it out as well.

Western R&B Classics — From the Latest Popular Tracks to All-Time Big Hits [2026] (91–100)
Die For You (Remix)The Weeknd & Ariana Grande

In recent years, it’s become fairly common for previously released songs to go “viral” on social media and have a revival hit.
What’s interesting is that it’s not just classic oldies—songs from just a few years ago are part of this trend too.
“Die For You,” a track from The Weeknd’s third album Starboy released in 2016, didn’t make a huge splash when it was put out as a single in 2017, despite The Weeknd being a leading figure in alternative R&B and now a massively popular top star.
Five years later, in 2022, it exploded in popularity on TikTok and eventually climbed as high as No.
6 on the Billboard chart—quite an interesting trajectory.
The version I’m introducing here is the remix released in February 2023, featuring the hugely popular singer Ariana Grande.
Reading the emotionally raw lyrics that candidly reflect The Weeknd’s mindset at the time might help explain why the song resonated with the social media generation.
It’s also fun to compare it with the original version!
You’re Makin’ Me HighToni Braxton

Speaking of Toni Braxton, she’s a major R&B star who racked up numerous hits in the 1990s.
Despite setbacks like a career slump and health issues, she navigated ups and downs and made a strong statement of vitality by releasing her 10th album, “Spell My Name,” in 2020—a recent highlight still fresh in our memories.
Among the many smash hits in her discography, as mentioned earlier, let’s spotlight “You’re Makin’ Me High,” which topped the U.S.
charts and won a Grammy.
Beyond the allure of her sensual, sultry alto voice, the track’s cool, hip-hop–tinged production—handled by Babyface and Bryce Wilson—epitomizes the heart of ’90s R&B and truly stands out.
Those who remember that era well will likely smile with nostalgia, while younger music fans in the 2020s, amid a wave of ’90s R&B revival, should find it refreshingly new.
BurnUsher

Usher is one of the most successful artists in the 2000s R&B scene.
He’s well-known in Japan too, so many of you may already be familiar with him.
One of his signature songs is Burn.
While many people associate Usher with dance-oriented R&B, this track delivers a slow, passionate R&B vibe.
That said, it still weaves in groovy melodies here and there, so it’s by no means lacking in rhythm or drive.
Nice & SlowUsher

Usher, an artist who enlivened the R&B scene of the 2000s, is known for music rooted in classic R&B sounds and is also highly acclaimed for his dance performances.
His track “Nice & Slow” is celebrated as one of his signature songs, crafted in a classic R&B style strongly influenced by his close collaborator Babyface.
While he has been leaning more toward dance music in recent years, it would be great to hear him return to timeless R&B like this again.
Sunshine & Rain…Kali Uchis

Over a mellow, soulful R&B sound that sparks the imagination, Virginia-born Kali Uchis sings about the importance of unwavering love and support.
The artist who has captivated so many fans has released the lead single from her fifth album, “Sincerely,” a gem of an R&B song created in collaboration with Dylan Wiggins.
After releasing her Spanish-language album “Orquídeas” in January 2024—which reached No.
2 on the Billboard 200—she delivers a heartfelt message through melodic English vocals.
It’s a heartwarming track with a laid-back mood, showcasing a sophisticated musicality that weaves in jazz and neo-soul.
