Released in May 2003 as the lead single from the ultimate female artist Beyoncé’s solo debut album “Dangerously in Love,” it became a huge worldwide smash along with the album.

Beyond being a classic of R&B, it stands as one of the defining songs of the early 2000s, and I fondly remember hearing it everywhere here in Japan.

It also drew buzz for featuring Jay-Z—Beyoncé’s boyfriend at the time and later her husband.

There’s no need to rehash how cool the track is, but with Beyoncé’s supremely sexy vocals, an irresistibly catchy melody, and Jay-Z’s effortlessly cool rap, it’s the kind of song you can confidently say was destined to be a hit.

A truly great track that had a major influence on the singers who followed.
