DIR EN GREY Popular Song Ranking [2026]

The visual kei rock band DIR EN GREY is active not only in Japan but around the world.

They are a band with many appealing qualities, including songs that incorporate a variety of genres and a vocalist with diverse singing techniques.

Here, we’ll introduce a ranking of some of DIR EN GREY’s most popular tracks.

DIFFERENT SENSEDIR EN GREY

A 25th single released in 2011.

With high-speed beats, a heavy sound, and vocals that mix growls and shouts, the style is quintessentially Dir.

The chorus is sung cleanly and powerfully at a slower tempo, and among their songs it is set at a very high key.

I’llDIR EN GREY12rank/position

DIR EN GREY, now a rock band of global renown.

They’re far beyond what can be summed up by the term “visual kei,” so for those who don’t know their indie era, this track may feel fresh.

Released in 1998 as their second indie single, “-I’ll-” features a song structure reminiscent of classic V-kei rock, yet you can already sense the individuality that would later explode—in the division of roles between the guitars and the restless bass lines.

The vocal performance, which strongly evokes Kuroyume’s influence, now feels refreshing in its own right when you look back at it.

INCONVENIENT IDEALDIR EN GREY13rank/position

When it comes to DIR EN GREY, their death growls and screams may be the most striking elements, but vocalist Kyo also excels at delicate expression.

A track that showcases Kyo’s transparent, ethereal singing and that I highly recommend is one included on the album UROBOROS, released in November 2008.

It’s a highly melodic piece without aggression, crafted into a dreamlike song centered on Kyo’s beautiful vocals.

The lyrics, which depict inner conflict and the depths of emotion, are also captivating.

A work where deep introspection intersects with intense emotional expression.

Included on the September 2018 album “The Insulated World,” this piece vividly showcases DIR EN GREY’s musical maturity.

Its distinctive soundscape—woven from heavy guitar riffs and delicate melodic lines—will surely leave a deep impression on listeners.

Themes such as self-deception, fear of loss, and a yearning for renewal are explored, carrying a powerful message that encourages self-reflection.

Highly recommended for those drawn to dark, complex musicality or wishing to confront their inner conflicts.

The Devil In MeDIR EN GREY

Among visual kei bands, DIR EN GREY is known as one of the top groups that frequently use mixed voice and falsetto.

From their catalog, I especially recommend “The Devil In Me” as a reference for mixed voice.

Kyo, who is among the best vocalists in the visual kei scene, delivers stunning mixed voice and death growls, offering many parts you can study.

While it’s difficult to replicate, it’s an excellent track to use as a reference.

The vocalist Kyo, guitarist Kaoru, guitarist Die, and drummer Shinya came together and, with the addition of bassist Toshiya, formed a band in Osaka in 1997.

In their early years, the name was written as “Dir en grey,” but since “Ryoujoku no Ame” it has been standardized as “DIR EN GREY.” They are active worldwide.

ZAN -Remnant-DIR EN GREY17rank/position

This is one of the three singles released for their major-label debut in 1999.

The unusually fast beat and unmistakably hardcore musical style were already making their presence felt.

In 1999, when they appeared on the TV show Music Station, this was the song they performed; there’s an anecdote that their performance, staged with provocations like those in the music video, prompted a flood of complaints to TV Asahi.

Since the preceding program at the time was the anime Crayon Shin-chan and they were the first act on the show, it likely left a significant trauma on the children who were watching live…

DIR EN GREY, who captivate fans with a unique worldview that fuses a wide range of genres.

Their song “Myaku” was released on February 16, 2000, and its music video—reflecting their visual kei roots—became a hot topic.

The work’s appeal lies in its balance of accessibility and literary depth, even as it tackles the weighty theme of cannibalism.

Sonically, it begins with an eerie intro and shifts dynamically into a powerful, beautiful melody.

In their own way of portraying the darker sides of humanity, DIR EN GREY leave a deep impression on listeners.

In particular, “Myaku” showcases the band’s high level of musicianship and vocalist Kyo’s exceptional expressive power, conveying their persistent spirit of musical exploration.

Evoking unease and madness, this track is recommended for those who want to delve into profound emotions or who believe in the power of music.

As a work filled with sorrow and wistfulness, this song has long been loved by DIR EN GREY fans.

It is characterized by a novel-like narrative and concrete imagery, lamenting a lost love and detailing the anguish of living with that pain.

Released in January 1999 as their major-label debut single, it also ranked on the Oricon charts.

The track was used as the theme song for the anime “Nihon Ichi no Otoko no Tamashii” within the TBS TV program “Wonderful.” It is included on the album GAUZE and the best-of compilation VESTIGE OF SCRATCHES.

Highly recommended for those carrying the pain of heartbreak or wishing to immerse themselves in beautiful memories of the past.

scale (as of a fish or reptile)DIR EN GREY20rank/position

This is a track included on their ninth album, “ARCHE.” The music video is a bit gory.

Despite the fast tempo, a dark mood is pushed to the forefront.

It’s heavy yet has a driving sense of speed, and it never gets boring to listen to.

The whole album is awesome, so be sure to check it out.
