Chicago SongDavid Sanborn36rank/position

American saxophonist David Sanborn is a master of fusion who blends jazz with rock, soul, R&B, and other genres.
He made his debut in 1975 with his first album, “Taking Off,” and has an outstanding track record, including six Grammy Awards, eight Gold albums, and one Platinum album.
His album “Straight to the Heart,” produced by Marcus Miller, won the 1986 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, among other accolades that attest to the high regard for Sanborn’s musicianship.
He began playing the saxophone as part of treatment for childhood polio and started performing at 14; appearances at Woodstock and collaborations with artists like Stevie Wonder and David Bowie speak to his exceptional talent.
He’s highly recommended as an entry point to fusion music!
ROUND TRIPDimension37rank/position

From the very first bars there’s no holding back—those explosive exchanges between sax, guitar, and synth make you want to leap right in! “ROUND TRIP” is the only single released in 1992 by DIMENSION, a band formed that same year around saxophonist Kazuki Katsuta, guitarist Takashi Masuzaki, and keyboardist Akira Onozuka—musicians who have mainly supported artists from the Being label.
The track was used as the theme for TV Asahi’s professional baseball broadcasts from 1992 to 1997, and it remains a fondly remembered classic among baseball fans of the era.
The band’s ensemble playing, underpinned by outstanding technique, is nothing short of superb; rather than being mere technical showmanship, the dynamic ebb and flow of the arrangement is catchy and melodic, offering a thoroughly enjoyable fusion number that anyone can appreciate.
If you’re looking for a breezy instrumental perfect for a summer drive, this is the one to pick.
Sky HighDonald Byrd38rank/position

A track from his classic album Black Byrd, by an artist who was among the first modern jazz musicians to turn his attention to rock sounds and fusion.
Listening now, it isn’t flashy, but considering he had taken part in numerous bebop projects on the Blue Note label, it seems he was quite determined to change his approach.
All Through the NightEarl Klugh39rank/position

A vivid fusion number that immediately hits your ears with the bright tone of a high-register gut guitar in the intro.
You could call it a textbook example of how to use slap bass—the percussive elements make the track immensely satisfying.
It’s the kind of song that can clear away a cloudy mood.
If you want to revel in the beautiful timbre of a gut guitar, this masterpiece is as perfect as it gets.
