MONDO GROSSO is a project led by Shinichi Osawa, who is active as a producer and DJ both in Japan and abroad.
After restarting activities for the first time in 14 years, he released an album in June 2017 titled “Nando Demo Atarashiku Umareru” (Reborn Again and Always Starting New), and this track from the album is a masterpiece featuring Hikari Mitsushima on vocals.
Her transparent voice layered with beautiful strings creates a pleasantly floating sensation, as if you’ve wandered into a labyrinth of the night.
The music video, shot in a single take on the streets of Hong Kong, also became a hot topic when it won Best Dance Video at the MTV VMAJ 2017.
With a danceable beat yet a lingering sense of poignancy, the melody gently accompanies the loneliness of sleepless nights.
Be sure to give it a listen as background music in a quiet, tranquil room.

A song featuring Aina The End—one of the most charismatic members of BiSH—on vocals.
It was newly written and produced by Shinichi Osawa, also known as MONDO GROSSO.
She, with a girlish air, exudes a bewitching allure through avant-garde dance.
It’s very sexy—she even has the allure of a mature woman.
I think the visuals also contribute to this effect.
It will captivate both men and women alike.

Mondo Grosso is a band formed in Kyoto in 1991, originating as a spinoff from Kyoto Jazz Massive.
The band’s name comes from Italian, meaning “big world.” Centered around club music, they have many crossover tracks spanning acid jazz, soul, hip-hop, bossa nova, and R&B, as well as music rooted in digital styles such as house, breakbeats, and techno.
Their sonic evolution, from a band to a solo project, is also wide-ranging.
Souffles H (King Street Club Mix)Mondo Grosso6rank/position

Since his debut in 1993, Shinichi Osawa has earned worldwide acclaim as one of Japan’s leading musicians, and among his many endeavors, his work under the name MONDO GROSSO is especially well known.
MONDO GROSSO originally started as a band, with Osawa serving as leader and bassist, but it later transitioned into his solo project.
The track introduced here, “SOUFFLES H,” is a richly jazzy instrumental number released in 1995, notable for the flute that resonates throughout the entire piece.
The version remixed by Brooklyn-born star producer and DJ Joe Claussell is particularly popular.
It’s a classic you’ll definitely want to hear if you’re interested in acid jazz.
One TemperatureMondo Grosso7rank/position

A one-of-a-kind track produced by Shinichi Osawa of MONDO GROSSO that cools down those tropical nights.
It’s a bit tricky to pin strictly under hip-hop, but it definitely counts as J-rap.
Its standout feature is the powerful flow of Takeshi Osumi, aka Big-O—modern and urban, yet old-school.
A key figure from the early days of Japanese hip-hop, he was active as a member of SHAKKAZOMBIE, then paused his activities, returning to the studio for the first time in ten years with this work.
RHYME, who would later team up as RHYME SO, also joins on vocals, adding color to the track.
