In Japan’s domestic rock scene, there are many bands that are so far from rock they’re practically pop.

Of course, that’s where the demand is, so there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but I imagine many people feel dissatisfied with the scene as it is.

For those people, I’d like to recommend the band toro.

They’re a three-piece that champions the “revival of rock” and is actively making waves.

Their authentic sound rivals that of the Western rock scene.

Definitely give them a listen.

“Shortcut feat.

Yui Yaguchi,” posted in 2020, went viral.

The group behind the song is the rock band yutori.

They originally planned to release just one track and then disband.

However, the response was so overwhelming that they decided to continue as a full-fledged band.

A hallmark of their music is how they capture the delicate emotions of youth and heartbreakingly poignant love stories in their songs.

They’re very active with live shows and festival appearances, so be sure to experience their world in person if you can.

Armed with passionate messages and a powerful sound, Sambomaster has secured a firm place in Japan’s rock scene.

Formed in 2000, this three-piece rock band is known for an energetic, emotional rock style.

They made their major debut in 2003, and their song used as the ending theme for the drama Densha Otoko became a big hit.

In 2011, they created a support song for the Great East Japan Earthquake recovery efforts, and they’ve continued to captivate audiences at numerous festivals and live shows.

In 2023, their achievements in the music world were recognized with the Miura Jun Award.

Takashi Yamaguchi’s distinctive vocals and powerful stage performances are must-see, and their lyrics—often centered on life and love—resonate with many.

They’re highly recommended for anyone looking to experience music brimming with energy and intensity.

March of LifeZa Kuromaniyonzu

Since their debut at a radio station’s live event in 2006, they have remained highly active up to 2023, when this was written.

Led by Hiroto Kōmoto, who spearheaded THE BLUE HEARTS, and Masatoshi Mashima, who also worked on THE HIGH-LOWS, their rock ’n’ roll—delivered by some of Japan’s foremost rock stars—is a must-listen even for those who aren’t rock fans.

Alongside simple, straightforward expression, their music overflows with masculine power.

At their core is a gently affirming message that makes you feel “there’s nothing in this world that’s truly no good,” making them a wonderful rock band.

Second Backer is a band active primarily on social media.

While rooted in alternative rock, their hallmark is catchy lyrics and hooks.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is Dōse Kareru Nara (“If We’re Going to Wither Anyway”).

It’s a track crafted in a breezy late-2000s alternative rock style, and despite being a three-piece, you can really feel how full and satisfying the performance is.

Beyond their sound, the lyrics are excellent too, so be sure to check them out.

They are known as a highly skilled band composed of members from Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.

Macaroni Empitsu have established a unique style that draws from a wide range of genres, including rock, hard rock, psychedelia, guitar pop, soul, and R&B.

Since forming in 2012, they have released numerous buzzworthy works such as the albums “HB” and “season,” and in November 2020 they made their major-label debut with their 6th mini-album, “Ai o Shirazuni Mahō wa Tsukaenai.” They have been active across many fields, providing theme songs for TV anime and dramas as well as music for commercials.

In December 2021, they won the Japan Record Awards’ Best New Artist.

Hattori’s emotional vocals, the high-level musicianship befitting conservatory-trained performers, and their diverse musicality have earned them support from a wide audience, from R&B fans to rock enthusiasts.

Unicorn is a pioneering rock band hailing from Hiroshima.

Formed in 1986, they made their major-label debut the following year with the album “BOOM.” They established a new band style in which all members write lyrics, compose music, and share vocal duties, and they have cultivated a wide-ranging sound from pop rock to progressive rock.

In 1990, their album “Kedamono no Arashi” won the Album Award at the 32nd Japan Record Awards.

After disbanding in 1993, they reunited in 2009 and have continued to captivate many fans with even greater musical freedom.

Highly recommended for listeners seeking distinctive sounds and a unique lyrical world.
