“Kanade” is the second single and signature song by Sukima Switch, a musical duo consisting of Takuya Ohashi and Shintaro Tokita.

It became a long-running hit, spending an extended period on charts such as the Oricon Chart and the Billboard Japan Hot 100.

It’s also popular for karaoke and has been covered by various artists! Although it’s a poignant number about parting, its relaxed tempo makes it easy for children to sing as well.

DoraemonHoshino Gen

This is a song created for an anime, sprinkled with words inspired by Doraemon.

It was written as the theme song for the film “Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Treasure Island,” and was later adopted as the opening theme for the TV anime.

The soulful rhythmic feel that comes through in the sound is also striking.

When singing, it’s important to be mindful of the crispness of the words and the rhythm.

Because there isn’t much movement in pitch, it’s crucial to avoid letting the diction become vague.

The repeated “do” is another key element of the song, so clear enunciation may be important as well.

Anpanman is a character hugely popular with toddlers.

It’s so widespread that there might not be a child who doesn’t know him.

Surely today’s elementary school kids also grew up watching the anime “Let’s Go! Anpanman” when they were little.

So how about singing an Anpanman song for the first time in a while? Our recommendation is “Anpanman Taisou.” It’s one of the anime’s ending themes.

As a song from a toddler-oriented anime, it’s naturally easy to sing, and its gentle, encouraging lyrics still resonate in your heart even now that you’re older.

Velvet Poemback number

Back number is a rock band that has continued to enjoy popularity since the 2000s.

While they’re labeled a rock band, in reality their music has very strong pop elements, making it a band known for having relatively few complex melodies.

Among back number’s songs, the one I especially recommend for elementary school students is Velvet no Uta (“Velvet Poem”).

Not only is the melody simple and easy for children to sing, but the song also centers on themes of growth and challenge, making it an ethically recommendable piece as well.

paprikaFoorin×Yonezu Kenshi

Paprika is a collaboration song by Foorin and Kenshi Yonezu, and it’s hugely popular among children.

Created as the support song for the NHK 2020 Support Song Project, it spread across generations and became a social phenomenon.

Its fun, dynamic melody makes you want to sing along as soon as you hear it.

With an overall relaxed rhythm, it’s easy even for beginners to sing, and many kids already know the lyrics by heart.

If you sing it at karaoke, it might turn into a big sing-along before you know it!

Baby youyuka

Yuka’s song “Baby you” is a sparkly pop tune that makes your heart dance no matter the moment—perfect for upper elementary school kids to enjoy.

Its bright, shuffle-beat rhythm is so lively it makes you want to move your body.

With this track, karaoke with friends and family turns into an even happier time.

The easy-to-understand lyrics guarantee a fun sing-along, and adjusting the key on the karaoke machine makes it more comfortable to sing, so even beginners can relax.

Its catchy melody sticks in your head after just one listen and is loved by people of all ages.

Carrying YouInoue Azumi

It’s “Carrying You,” well known from Studio Ghibli’s film Castle in the Sky! This song is sometimes chosen as a piece for choir competitions, too.

Among middle schoolers, almost everyone knows it, right? Some people aren’t confident in singing because they don’t know how to sing like in typical J-pop, and their singing ends up sounding choral.

If that’s you, try choosing a song where that choir-like quality becomes your strength—you’ll be able to sing it perfectly! It’s your unique voice, so pick songs that showcase your best qualities and break out of your shell!
