September crafts for 2-year-olds! A collection of make-and-play ideas to enjoy autumn

Here are some autumn craft ideas you can enjoy with two-year-olds! We’ve gathered projects that feature September’s seasonal motifs—like moon viewing, autumn leaves, and mushrooms—that spark children’s curiosity.

Kids can have fun creating with a variety of techniques such as daubers, stamping, and torn-paper collage.

Use everyday materials like bubble wrap and tissue paper to express the beauty of autumn together.

Display the finished pieces to fill your classroom with wonderful memories.

Because the children’s creations are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku (制作)” meaning “production/work” in the text.

Dye paper towels to make rolling apples

Let’s make cute, round little apples by dyeing kitchen paper! If you fold the kitchen paper and let watercolor paint bleed into it, it will dye beautifully.

For red apples, dip it in red, orange, or yellow paints; for blue apples, try green, yellow-green, or yellow, and enjoy the bleeding effects.

Kids will be fascinated to see what color patterns appear—there’s no doubt it will be exciting! Once the kitchen paper is dyed, let it dry thoroughly, then cut it into circles to finish.

You can even use your round apples to play pretend shop and get creative with different play ideas!

Rabbit moon-viewing with footprint stamps

One of the events in September is the Mid-Autumn Moon Viewing (Tsukimi).

Picture the round, beautiful moon; the rabbit said to live on the moon—an essential character for Tsukimi; and the round, delicious moon-viewing dumplings.

How about making a “moon-viewing rabbit” that brings this scene to life? For the rabbit’s ears, use the children’s footprints.

Painting the bottoms of their feet will probably feel a bit strange, but that’s part of the fun.

Cut out the footprint stamps, paste them onto construction paper of the same color, and draw the rabbit’s face.

Fallen Leaves Cake

[Ages 0–2] Feel the Fall: Make a Leaf Cake!
Fallen Leaves Cake

Autumn parks are full of fallen leaves and acorns, and you can really feel the season, can’t you? Kids tend to play at the park more in autumn, so why not use the leaves and acorns you find there to make a “fallen-leaf cake” craft? First, prepare a three-tier cake base out of cardboard.

Have the children color some drawing paper and paste it onto the base, then let them decorate it with the fallen leaves and acorns.

The sticking and pasting are easy even for little kids, so it’s a simple way to enjoy an art experience!

Torn-paper collage grapes

Indoor play for 1-year-olds: Torn-paper collage | At-home activity / Autumn craft / Grape craft
Torn-paper collage grapes

Let’s make grapes—the quintessential autumn fruit—using a torn-paper collage.

First, draw grapes on construction paper and prepare the surface so the torn origami pieces can be pasted on.

Together with the children, tear purple origami paper into various shapes and colors, then enjoy sticking the pieces onto the drawing or spreading glue and arranging them freely.

Tearing and pasting the paper stimulates the children’s senses and results in works that showcase each child’s unique sensibility.

Using two shades of origami paper is recommended, as it helps express light and dark.

Moon-viewing stencil

In September, when the moon looks especially beautiful, let’s try painting the moon using a stencil.

Prepare circular moon shapes in advance by cutting them out of construction paper.

Have the children add color on top using paint-dabbed balloons, stampers, or their fingers.

Simply coloring it nicely is fine, but if you also prepare construction paper cut into rabbit shapes and place one on the moon while stamping, then remove it afterward, you’ll get a picture where a rabbit appears to float within the moon.

The pop-pop stamping action is fun, so the children will enjoy the activity.

Autumn trees with a stamp

Autumn trees with a stamp

An autumn tree painted with a handmade tampo is a craft that lets children enjoy paint in a different way than usual.

The tampo itself is easy to make—even for small children—by simply attaching cotton and gauze to a small container like a plastic bottle.

The unique patterns and soft hues created by the cotton and gauze will spark children’s imaginations and keep them absorbed in the activity.

It’s a great idea for an autumn craft—simple and satisfying, since all you do is press it onto the paper.

Grapes made with tissue paper

Autumn is full of delicious foods, and it’s especially the season when many fruits are harvested.

How about making grapes, a seasonal fruit you can enjoy in autumn? Roll purple tissue paper into balls to create the many round grape berries in a cluster, and have the children stamp their handprints in green on construction paper, cut them out, and use them as grape leaves.

Glue the grape berries onto a backing sheet of the same color.

The number of berries and how they are arranged will change the size and appearance, giving each piece its own personality.
