Mural of a Crane and a Turtle
How about making a lucky wall decoration featuring cranes and turtles, symbols of longevity, perfect for Respect for the Aged Day? If you craft cranes from colored paper using white as the base with black on the wings and red as an accent on the head, and turtles with green as the base, your wall will instantly look lively.
Adding elements like green pines and pink plum blossoms around them will make it even more festive.
You could also put up name tags for groups such as those celebrating their 70th (Koki), 77th (Kiju), 88th (Beiju), 80th (Sanju), and 90th (Sotsuju) birthdays, or include a longevity ranking chart to create a cheerful atmosphere.
A cute rabbit garland from the 100-yen shop

When you look at the moon, doesn’t it seem like a cute rabbit is pounding mochi? There’s even a legend about it, which is why rabbits pair so well with moon-viewing.
Let’s make a rabbit garland to brighten up your tsukimi! All you have to do is attach rabbit ears—cut from felt—to pom-poms made of yarn.
If you want an easier way to make pom-poms, you can use a pom-pom maker available at 100-yen shops.
You could also stick patterned fabric onto the felt ears for a stylish finish.
Two-toned cosmos flower folded from a single sheet

Here’s how to make a cosmos flower that shows both sides of the origami paper to create a two-toned bloom.
It’s a delicate process, but you only need origami paper, and the key is making small cuts at the end to create petal-like shapes.
There are many folding steps, but if you go slowly, it’s not too difficult.
It might be nice to fold them together during craft time at a facility and use them as wall decorations.
Using double-sided colored origami paper would also make the flowers colorful and beautiful.
Cosmos in 2 Minutes! Easy Version

Here’s a very easy way to make cosmos flowers using scrap materials.
Fold origami paper three times, then use pinking shears to make cuts on one side.
Snip between the petals with scissors, apply double-sided tape to the bottom, and roll a plastic bottle cap onto it to secure.
Stuff the inside of the bottle cap with crumpled yellow tissue paper, curl the petals, and you’re done.
If you’ve got lots of spare plastic bottle caps, why not take this opportunity to put them to use?
Moon-viewing wreath

Let’s make a cute Tsukimi-themed wreath that you can hang in various places, like on walls or doors.
You can craft everything out of origami—from the wreath base to the decorations—or you can make the base using a paper plate with the center cut out or donut-shaped cardstock, and then decorate it with parts made from origami or construction paper.
Create and attach parts that evoke Tsukimi, such as the moon, rabbits, pampas grass, and moon-viewing dumplings.
Also make good use of sparkly origami and stickers as you finish it up.
Attach a string or similar so it’s easy to hang, and you’re done.
Moon-viewing hanging decoration

A hanging decoration perfect for autumn, featuring motifs related to the Harvest Moon! Make moon-viewing dumplings, rabbits, gentians (a representative autumn flower), and maple leaves out of origami or chiyogami paper, then tie them to strings.
If you stick a moon and pampas grass on the wall and hang the decoration in front of them, it creates depth and makes the display even more charming.
It’s also recommended to let seniors freely create autumn-themed motifs and hang them up together.
Be sure to make it as a group while enjoying lively conversations about autumn!
Moon-viewing Dumpling Wall Decorations

Even if it’s difficult to display real Tsukimi dango, a wall decoration lets you enjoy the moon-viewing scene without taking up space! Cut out Tsukimi dango and the sanpō (the tray that holds the dango) from construction paper and stick them on the wall.
If you want a slightly three-dimensional look, you could use cotton or crumpled tissue paper for the dango.
Around the dango, try adding a lively touch by sticking on a moon, pampas grass, and rabbits cut from construction paper as well.
