Naturally, many soul music bands are active in Japan as well.

They flexibly incorporate soul music, jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, and perform live not only in Japan but also in Europe—an exceptionally accomplished band.

A seven-piece funk band formed in 2009 by members of the jazz club at Tama Art University.

With vocalist Takahashi’s gravelly voice and soulful performances, they create a one-of-a-kind sound.

Their musical style is unique, featuring works such as songs from the perspective of a woman dating an unsuccessful bandman.

AliensKirinji

Formed by the brothers Takaki Horigome (older) and Yasuyuki Horigome (younger), Kirinji is often called the Japanese Steely Dan, known for their pop sensibilities and sophisticated sound.

Aliens was released as Kirinji’s sixth single and can be considered one of their signature songs, having ranked third in single sales.

Kirinji, whom actor Mirai Moriyama has publicly declared himself a huge fan of, has been covered by numerous artists.

There’s no doubt they’re a band that captivates and is loved by many!

They’re a three-piece band based in Tokyo.

Within a year of forming, they performed at FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL ’15 ROOKIE A GO-GO and even toured the U.S., showcasing a worldwide presence.

Their laid-back sound, rooted in soul, rock, and reggae, is pleasantly easygoing.

Summer Soulcero

cero is a Tokyo-based band formed in 2004 by Shohei Takagi, Yu Arauchi, and Tsubasa Hashimoto.

The album Obscure Ride, with its sound that foregrounds black music influences, received high acclaim across the music industry and won numerous awards.

The fourth track, Summer Soul, features an ensemble of bass with emphasized low end and electric piano, resulting in a sophisticated, adult feel imbued with a languid sensuality.

PAELLAS is a city pop band formed in 2009 and based in Tokyo.

In June 2017, they signed with Space Shower Music, and their polished sound earned them popularity not only in Japan but also across various Asian countries.

Although they unfortunately announced their breakup in 2019, their stylish sound still resonates today.

Their 2017 release “Shooting Star” features a refined sound reminiscent of Jamiroquai, making it an irresistible track for fans of acid jazz.
