If you want to add a stylish touch to your summer, we recommend “On Fire.” This track was released by Michel Camilo, a leading figure among modern jazz pianists.

Modern jazz can often feel a bit inaccessible, with frequent key changes and the like.

However, this piece is relatively catchy and upbeat, making it enjoyable even for those not well-versed in jazz.

Give it a spin for your summer drives.

SummertimeNorah Jones

It was an inserted song from the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess.

Based on the novel by DuBose Heyward, who also wrote the opera’s libretto and lyrics, it was completed with music and revisions by the Gershwin brothers.

The song serves as a key lullaby in the drama.

It was also adapted into a film in 1959.

Patrice Rushen is a singer of jazz, soul, and R&B, as well as a pianist.

One of her signature songs is the 1982 release “Forget Me Nots,” but I also recommend “Stepping Stones” from her 1977 album Shout It Out.

It’s a pioneering track in the genre known as jazz-funk, which blends jazz and funk.

It’s more groove-friendly than standard jazz, yet it has a curious tone that isn’t as slick as pure funk—and that’s part of its appeal.

If you’ve never listened to this genre, it’s definitely worth a listen.

Black MarketWeather Report

This track by Weather Report—the legendary electric jazz band that featured Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Jaco Pastorius—draws heavily on African music, especially in its rhythmic approach, giving it a dense, swirling vibe that makes it perfect for summer.

Released in 1976, it’s the title track of the album, and the Africa-inspired cover art also overflows with a summery feel.

I’ll Still Love YouKing James Version

A classic jazz piece by King James Version, whose floating, dreamy track sensibility and moody atmosphere have regained attention after Japanese sampling sparked renewed interest.

With a universally appealing progression that enhances its comfort, it’s a perfect recommendation for summer listening.

Summer NightsLonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes

It may not be a so-called famous jazz standard, but let me introduce a classic that will cool you down in the summer heat! It’s a track from pianist Lonnie Liston Smith—well known among devoted rare groove fans—featured on his 1975 album Visions of a New World.

You can enjoy it as a refreshingly cool chill-out tune, and it would feel amazing to surrender to its smooth groove by the seaside.

By the way, this track was sampled on Joey Bada$$’s early mixtape 1999, which has a cult following, so check it out if you’re interested!

SummertimeMiles Davis

This piece was composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess.

Although it is a lullaby in content, it has been performed by many artists as a jazz standard up to the present day.

It’s short with a simple progression, so it’s a song enjoyed in a variety of arrangements—from ballads to funk.
