Sounds of Summer: Sound Effects and Soothing Ambient Sounds (21–30)
Summer heat haze and mirage

On days when it’s very sunny with strong sunlight and little wind, you can see shimmering heat haze wavering over things like asphalt roads or car roofs.
It’s a phenomenon often observed in summer, evoking the inescapable heat of strong sun and near windless conditions.
A mirage is a larger-scale phenomenon than a heat haze.
Summer: the chirping of cicadas

Alongside the sound of cicadas, you can also hear other insects.
When it’s the brown cicada (aburazemi) that keeps droning nonstop with its ji-ji-ji call, it brings to mind sweltering heat, but this is different—it conjures the feeling of a pleasant summer day.
It makes me feel as if I were on the tatami mats at my grandmother’s house in the countryside.

The Murmuring River and the Minmin Cicadas

When it comes to the sound of cicadas, it’s a classic summer sound effect.
In addition to the cicadas’ chirping, this also includes the gentle murmur of a stream.
Just with those elements, it creates such a cool and refreshing atmosphere.
It’s a soothing sound effect that evokes both the heat of summer and the chill of water.
Sounds of Japanese summer: cicada sound effects

These are cicada sound effects that can instantly bring back the feeling of summer—even if you listen to them in the dead of winter.
For Japanese people, the chirping of cicadas is perhaps the quintessential sound that conjures up summer in an instant.
It’s the kind of sound effect that suddenly brings back forgotten memories of childhood summer vacations.
Kuwana Suigō Fireworks 2016

This is footage of a fireworks festival that began being held in 1934 to commemorate the completion of the Ise Bridge.
Featuring thousands of star mines, underwater fireworks, a Niagara display, and some of the largest two-foot shells in the Tokai region, the thunderous sound is incredibly powerful.
You can also hear the spectators, adding a vivid sense of presence.
Waterwheels and Evening Cicadas

The higurashi is a type of cicada in Japan known for its beautiful song and has often been used as a subject in literature and other arts.
Its emotionally rich call is perhaps perfect for evoking various memories of summer.
When the sound of water from a turning waterwheel overlaps with the higurashi’s song, it becomes all the more moving.
The sound of waves and wind chimes

In a sense, the final track is an ideal pop song.
It sings about everyday life, and it’s become a song I want to listen to before heading to work each day.
For office workers around the same age, I think playing it during breakfast will help you get through the day somehow.
