Masterpieces and popular songs by Tokyo Jihen

Here are some songs by Tokyo Jihen, the rock band centered around Ringo Sheena, who is also active as a solo artist.

Although Tokyo Jihen disbanded in 2012 to much regret, we received the happy news of their “reboot” at the start of 2020!

Their appeal lies in the mysterious power of their music: it isn’t exactly pop, yet it’s catchy and irresistibly listenable, combined with the high level of musicianship of each member.

The band was formed when Ringo Sheena, who was working solo at the time, found it difficult to maintain her motivation and thought, “If I compose as though I’m writing songs for band members, maybe I’ll feel more inspired.”

With that origin in mind, give another listen to the many masterpieces that Tokyo Jihen has created.

Tokyo Jihen’s classic and popular songs (21–30)

Welcome to HeavenToukyou Jihen

Tengoku E Youkoso -Where’s Heaven-
Welcome to HeavenToukyou Jihen

This is a song written specifically for the drama “Atami no Sousakan.” It’s a slow, weighty, and powerful track that’s perfectly suited to themes like life and farewell.

There are multiple versions—not only do the lyrics differ between Japanese and English, but the overall mood changes significantly as well, so be sure to check them out.

distress (at sea/in the mountains); being lost; stranded; a disaster situationToukyou Jihen

The guitar at the beginning of the song is distinctive.

Both the melody, which evokes a cold temperature, and the lyrics, which bring to mind what happens to people in a pinch, make the title “Sōnan” (Distress/Stranded) feel very fitting.

The part that features a sound like a tongue click is really cool.

Radio Communication / Tokyo Incidents

The song has a cool sound.

At the live show, the lighting flashed like strobe lights, giving it a unique live-only kind of cool.

The drums and bass are great, and it feels good no matter how many times I listen.

The vocalist’s mechanical high tones are fantastic too.

a winning battleToukyou Jihen

It’s a song with a very cool bassline.

No matter what, my eyes keep getting drawn to drummer Toshiki Hata’s distinctive hairstyle in the music video, but I really love the scene where a series of photos like off-shots of the members appears midway, and I end up watching it over and over.

desperate situation; a predicament with no way out; a crisis pointToukyou Jihen

[Tokyo Incidents] I tried playing “Desperate Situation” [Bass]
desperate situation; a predicament with no way out; a crisis pointToukyou Jihen

It’s a song about an immense sorrow and the person who bears it.

As the title “Desperate Situation” suggests, the grief is overwhelming and utterly inescapable.

Faced with such crushing sadness, what feelings arise, and how do those feelings change over time? This masterpiece elegantly captures that emotional journey, adorning it with a light, lively rhythm.

scene of carnage; chaotic situation; crisis (literally: battlefield of asuras)Toukyou Jihen

The instrumental section is really cool in this song.

The difficulty is, of course, high, but drummer Toshiki Hata posted a drum lesson video for it.

Personally, I prefer the “Adult version” of this song, the one included on the album Adult.

Too handsomeToukyou Jihen

Tokyo Incidents – Too Handsome
Too handsomeToukyou Jihen

The music video is in black and white, giving it a slightly retro, mature vibe, but the music itself feels fresh and modern.

Every time, I can’t help thinking how incredibly handsome all the members are.

The lyrics are thought-provoking in that distinctly Tokyo Jihen way.
