[2026] Anti-war songs in Western music. Songs that wish for peace.

As of 2026, there is still no sign of a resolution to the situation in Ukraine, and since October 2023, armed clashes between Israel and Gaza have broken out, plunging the world into continued turmoil.

More recently, new fighting engulfing the entire Middle East has intensified, with the United States and Israel carrying out large-scale airstrikes on military and political targets inside Iran.

In this article, we’ve compiled a selection of overseas anti-war songs that will move listeners emotionally—precisely the kind of music we want you to hear in times like these—spanning different eras and genres.

Please listen while checking the parallel translations and such—the messages each artist has imbued in their work, from heartfelt wishes for peace to, at times, stern denunciations of those in power.

Square DanceEminem

Speaking of The Eminem Show, the third album released by the pinnacle of white rappers, Eminem, in 2002, it’s a masterpiece that went down in history as the best-selling album worldwide that year.

Known for his provocative style and established as a superstar, Eminem delivered what could be called a shocking monologue on this record.

Among its tracks, “Square Dance,” the fifth song, is one I want people to listen to today.

It wasn’t released as a single and may have the status of a hidden gem, but its lyrics mainly address the events of 9/11 in 2001 and the subsequent U.S.-led War on Terror.

While employing language that’s extreme and laced with black humor, he incisively cuts into the darker side of power—very much in line with Eminem at the time.

The reality of early-2000s America may sound even heavier to our ears in 2022 than ever before.

It’s a different kind of anti-war song, but precisely because we live in such a tumultuous era, I hope people will give it a fresh listen.

Mama ŠČ!Let 3

Since its release on January 20, 2023, “Mama ŠČ!” by the Croatian rock band Let 3 has sparked reactions around the world.

Their shocking performance at the Eurovision Song Contest powerfully underscored their anti-war message.

Challenging those in power and sounding the alarm against folly, hunger, and stereotypes, the song resonates deeply with listeners.

By setting their protest against the realities of war to music, Let 3 continue to convey their wish for peace.

Provocative yet empathetic, this track is a superb example of music’s power, and I highly recommend it to listeners from all walks of life!

What Are You Fighting ForPHIL OCHS

The legendary folk singer Phil Ochs.

He was a folk singer who was very active in the 1960s and, much like Shogo Hamada in Japan, created many works with anti-war themes.

Among Phil Ochs’s songs, the one I especially recommend is What Are You Fighting For.

As the title suggests, the lyrics ask why we must take each other’s lives—what it is we are fighting for.

Country Joe and the Fish is a psychedelic rock band fronted by lead singer Country Joe McDonald.

Known as a socially conscious band, they gained popularity with their biting, ironic lyrics.

One of their signature songs is I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag.

It’s an anti–Vietnam War song featuring powerful lyrics laced with black comedy.

Be sure to check it out.

WarEdwin Starr

Edwin Starr’s antiwar song “War” is a classic that delivered a powerful message in the United States in 1970, amid the turmoil of the Vietnam War.

Originally intended to be sung by The Temptations, the song is also known in Japan by the title “Kuroi Sensō” (“Black War”).

Starr’s version of “War” was a massive hit, reaching No.

1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning a Grammy Award in 1971.

Its repeated, straightforward questioning of war and Starr’s commanding vocals remind listeners of the enduring importance of opposing war.

Bob Marley, the god of reggae.

He wasn’t just an artist; he appealed for peace by getting the leaders of Jamaica’s ruling and opposition parties—who were locked in violent conflict—to shake hands.

Unfortunately, the strife did not come to an end, but his achievements continue to influence many artists today.

His song “War” is one of his signature tracks.

Centered on themes of peace and anti-war, this love-and-peace anthem has surely soothed the hearts of many.

Hands Held High – Linkin Park (Minutes To Midnight)
Hands Held HighLinkin Park

A song by Linkin Park, hailed as the best-selling band of the 21st century, whose vocalist Chester Bennington’s sudden passing in 2017 shocked the world.

Featured on their third album, Minutes to Midnight, this track blends a calm yet powerful rap with a hymn-like, ethereal chorus that truly moves you.

Its cynical lyrics, which depict the horrors of war and criticize those in power, convey anger toward the harsh realities and injustices of the world.

With a sacred, requiem-like quality for lost lives, it’s a number that reaffirms the depth of Linkin Park’s message and the breadth of their musicality.
