The Autumn StoneThe Small Faces

Small Faces ….. The Autumn Stone ♥
The Autumn StoneThe Small Faces

For anyone who loves ’60s British rock—especially the mod scene—the Small Faces are a big name everyone knows.

Fronted by the legendary Steve Marriott, whose charismatic presence and powerhouse R&B-derived vocals left an indelible mark, the band is revered by countless musicians—Paul Weller being a prime example.

Marriott later found success with Humble Pie as well, but tragically died in an accident at the age of just 44.

The Autumn Stone, which also lent its name to a 1969 compilation album, is a hauntingly beautiful acoustic ballad that seems to embody the band’s quieter side.

Marriott’s tender, heartfelt singing and the melody are, of course, exquisite, and the distinctly ’60s-sounding flute that rings out midway through the track adds a lovely touch.

Although it’s a perfect song for long autumn nights, it’s interesting that the phrase “The Autumn Stone” never appears in the lyrics; instead, there are hints of spring’s arrival.

Is that a characteristically British irony, or is there another meaning at work? Imagining the possibilities is part of the fun.
